School gardens, particularly in World War I, were one piece of a larger sentiment on the importance of patriotism and industriousness. No effort was too small, and school gardens, particularly the United States School Garden Army (USSGA), received coverage in the press.

In addition to coverage on the war itself, newspapers also ran a series of columns to encourage the little soldiers of the USSGA.
