Afghanistan: A Guide to Maps and Geographic Reference Materials

This research guide provides information about the Library of Congress digital collections and print resources related to maps of Afghanistan.

Introduction

The Geography and Map Division maintains a large collection of maps and reference materials that pertain to Afghanistan.

In addition to the digitized images that are available on the Library's website, the Geography and Map Division also holds both cataloged and uncatalogued maps of Afghanistan that have not been digitized. These include maps that show the areas of Central Asia and Afghanistan that were published from the 16th to the 21st centuries.

The purpose of this guide is to provide an overview of both modern and historical maps of Afghanistan that are held in the Geography and Map Division. This resource guide compiles a list of maps, atlases, digital images, and published reference sources about Afghanistan. For more information, including a brief history of Afghanistan before the 19th century, see The Great Game and Afghanistan story map.
