This volume chronicles the stereotypical portrayals of Blacks in advertising from the turn of the century to the present. Beginning with slave advertisements, the author discusses how slavery led to the stereotypes found in early advertisements. From the end of the slave era to the culmination of the Civil Rights movement, advertising portrayed Blacks as Aunt Jemimas, Uncle Bens, and Rastuses in vintage as well as more contemporary advertisements featuring Blacks.

This study on the market impact of African Americans analyzes the buying power of the black population of seventeen of the largest southern cities from Houston, Texas, to Richmond, Virginia, and discusses how best to appeal to urban black consumers through advertising. This report of a survey undertaken by the National Negro Business League with funding from the Laura Spelman Memorial Fund, a Rockefeller family foundation, analyzes 2,817 small businesses owned and/or operated by African Americans in thirty-three cities, principally in the South. Business categories range from automobiles, restaurants, tailors, undertakers, barber shops, publishers and printers to amusement vendors and photographers. The survey documents the businesses' locations, the kinds and extent of their merchandising, and the fields in which black entrepreneurship operated most profitably at the time. The report also discusses the problems and weaknesses of black business life.
