The continent of Africa is large and diverse, comprising many different economic regions, resources, and trading partners. This guide pulls together information resources for researchers of African businesses and economies including print and online resources, subscription databases, online news sources, business directories, historical resources, and other major digital resources. The resources are arranged both by topic and geographic region. Resources listed on the General Resources pages can also provide information on particular countries or regions.
Many of the digital resources in this guide are freely available online. However, some of these are subscription-based and are available only to researchers working onsite at the Library of Congress or from another subscribing institution. These databases may be available to you from your local university or research institution.
This guide is not an exhaustive list of resources but rather a good starting point for African business and economics research. To expand your research, please use the Library's catalog.
This guide contains English-language resources. For print resources in non-English languages, please consult the African & Middle Eastern Reading Room.
Please send research questions within the scope of this guide to Ask-A-Business Librarian. For questions on other academic disciplines related to Africa please send questions to the African and Middle Eastern Studies reference specialists.
Part of the Science & Business Reading Room at the Library of Congress, the Business Section is the starting point for conducting research at the Library of Congress in the subject areas of business and economics. Here, reference specialists in specific subject areas of business assist patrons in formulating search strategies and gaining access to the information and materials contained in the Library's rich collections of business and economics materials.
