American Women: Resources from the Manuscript Collections

Evidence of women’s production of scientific and technical knowledge can be found throughout the Manuscript Division’s collections. Relevant items can especially be found in collections that predate scientific professionalization, highlight individuals whose work fell outside the institutional boundaries of professional science, or feature spouses whose insights and labor went unrecognized. In addition to those women in the medical fields, women scientists whose careers are represented in the division worked in the fields of aeronautics and astronautics; agriculture and horticulture; the natural sciences, and the social sciences, especially the field of anthropology.
