"I Do Solemnly Swear..." Inaugural Materials from the Collections of the Library of Congress
Items from eighteen presidents are featured in this exhibition, including the manuscript of Jackson's first inaugural address and an illustration of the "White House mob" that swarmed the presidential mansion to celebrate Jackson's inauguration.
Exploring the Early Americas
This exhibit illuminates indigenous cultures, the drama of the encounters between Native Americans and European explorers and settlers, and the pivotal changes caused by the meeting of the American and European worlds. Under the “Aftermath of the Encounter” portion of the exhibit, the section on “Competition for Empire” features items exploring “Andrew Jackson, Governor of the Florida Territory”; and “The Adams-Onís Treaty,” which was negotiated in response to Andrew Jackson’s 1817-1818 invasion of Florida to stop Seminole raids on U.S. settlements along the Georgia-Florida border (also known as the First Seminole War). The treaty brought Florida into the United States.

A finding aid for the Andrew Jackson Donelson Papers collection in the Library of Congress Manuscript Division. Donelson was Andrew Jackson's wife's nephew, was named for him, and was brought up at The Hermitage; in the course of a distinguished career, he served as Jackson's aide-de-camp during the Seminole campaign and as Jackson's private secretary during his presidency.

January 8, 1815
On January 8, 1815, Major General Andrew Jackson led a small, poorly-equipped army to victory against eight thousand British troops at the Battle of New Orleans. The victory made Jackson a national hero.
January 13, 1833
On January 13, 1833, President Andrew Jackson wrote Vice President Martin Van Buren expressing his opposition to South Carolina's defiance of federal authority. He closed with the assertion, "nothing must be permitted to weaken our government at home or abroad."
