Architecture, Design and Engineering Collections in the Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Division

Primary Archives

This section of the guide provides comprehensive coverage of the collections for which the primary body of an architect’s, designer’s, or engineer’s work is in the Prints & Photographs Division. The combined chronological range and qualitative depth of the holdings includes individuals and firms whose professional contributions have significantly influenced or defined developments in the fields of American architecture, design, and engineering. The collections are particularly valuable not only for the development of scholarly theses but for historic preservationists who need detailed documentation for the restoration of specific buildings. For each major era of architectural design, the Library tries to have one archive to represent the full working method and context of a designer with a national practice and impact.
