In the late 19th century, professional organizations for historians often focused on making archival collections accessible to scholars. The American Historical Association records, 1884-1975, for example, includes the organization's advocacy for the creation of a federal records repositories. Notable AHA officers include Manuscript Division chiefs Worthington Chauncey Ford and J. Franklin Jameson. The records of the Joint Committee on Materials Research, a program of the American Council of Learned Societies, span the years 1925-1940 and include correspondence with Solon J. Buck, Waldo Gifford Leland, and Librarian of Congress Archibald MacLeish, among others involved in preservation of historical materials for scholarly research.
