Arnold Schoenberg: A Guide to Primary and Secondary Resources at the Library of Congress

Iconography

The Music Division's collections include a handful of items of Schoenberg iconography. By far the most important is a self-portrait, Vision, oil on cardboard, that he painted in 1910.

Included on the front of the painting is a signed dedication to the conductor Leopold Stokowski, to whom Schoenberg gifted the portrait in September 1949. Stokowski gifted the portrait to the Music Division in 1954. The self-portrait does not have a record in the Online Catalog. Contact the Music Division for more information.
