Free databases and e-resources are freely accessible online. While this list is not exhaustive of all free resources, it highlights the breadth and depth of what is available today.

Guangming Ribao, a central newspaper of the Peoples Republic of China, has been reporting national news for over 60 years. The full-image and full-text Guangming Ribao Digital Archive gives comprehensive insight into developments in China in the 20th and into the 21st centuries.
Guangming Ribao, launched on June 16, 1949 by the China Democratic League, originally represented the eight minority democratic parties in China. In 1957, the newspaper reported widely on the various forums critical of the Communist Party which followed Mao Zedongs call to let one hundred flowers bloom. As a result, the paper was severely criticized in the Anti- Rightist Movement (1958) that followed. The paper then joined the mainstream of party publications.
Today, Guangming Ribao is an influential daily, specifically in the fields of science and technology, education and culture, with readership amongst state agencies, universities and schools, the armed forces and in intellectual circles. With correspondents resident in many countries worldwide, Guangming Ribao also reports on international news from a Chinese perspective.
The local gazetteer collections in Zhongguo Fang Zhi Ku are generally classified as two types: Provincial and content based series: Provincial series has 32 volumes covering provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions. The content based series is divided into five categories according to the content of the collected almanacs. One of the five series is reserved for national general records, various special journals, magazines, and foreign records. The rest of series are divided among provinces, prefectures and county prefectures.
Based on Erudition's unique digital-reconstruction technology, every record is excellently reconstructed to retain all the information and original images, which comprises a total of more than 2 billion words, more than 10 million pages of images and texts, and the total amount of information is about 350G. At the same time, the database is equipped with a distinctive retrieval system and a complete functional platform that enable information to be quickly retrieved from four paths: classified search, area search, item search, and full-text search. The system also allows functions such as comparison of different versions of rare books, punctuation annotation, etc.
