Belgium & Belgian Collections at the Library of Congress

Newspapers, Journals & Magazines

Belgian Red Cross / Charles Buchel ; printed by Johnson, Riddle & Co., Ltd., London, S.E.1915. Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division.

The Library's Serial and Government Publications Division maintains one of the most extensive collections of newspapers, current periodicals, comic books, and government publications. With over 25,000 non-US titles, it is the largest collection of international newspapers in the world. These materials are served in the Library's Newspaper and Current Periodical Reading Room. This collection includes thousands of Belgian newspapers, journals and magazines, which are either on microfilm or bound in the general collections. Several current Belgian newspapers and periodicals are available in the Newspaper & Current Periodical Reading Room. In addition, that reading room provides retrospective holdings of older Belgian newspapers, many of which are on microfilm. The Library's general collections include runs of approximately 3,000 retrospective or current journals, bulletins, annuals and other serials from Belgium. Subscription databases also allow access to French-, English-, and Dutch-language publications, and can be accessed onsite in any of the Library's three buildings. Unlike many of the online platforms or databases, the Library has open access to the complete archives of these titles—often from the first years of publication. Popular magazines in both Dutch and French can be ordered. Major Dutch-language publications like Trends-Tendances are available as are French-language magazines such as Le Vif/L’Express. The following finding aids and inventories are also helpful for locating Belgian newspaper holdings at the Library of Congress.

Many Belgian magazines require a subscription for access, but newspapers often allow public access to current articles. Major newspapers including Le Soir, Het Laatste Nieuws, and De Standaard are therefore listed under Digital Resources for French and Dutch Language Learning. The titles listed below can be viewed in the Newspaper and Current Periodical Reading Room at the Library of Congress. The following titles link to fuller bibliographic information in the Library of Congress Online Catalog. Links to additional online content are included when available.
