Introduction

The digital collections of the Library of Congress contain a wide variety of material associated with Booker T. Washington. Washington founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in 1881, which later became Tuskegee University. On September 18, 1895, Washington attracted national attention when he delivered the Atlanta Compromise Address before the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta, Georgia.
