Foreign Copying Program: United Kingdom of Great Britain

Baring Brothers

The records of the London-based Baring Brothers banking firm held by the Library of Congress consist of reproductions of records (1795-1836) currently held by the firm in the UK and other records (1781-1891) that have been removed to Canada. The material copied at the Baring Brothers headquarters in London consists of the correspondence of Alexander Baring, 1st Baron of Ashburton, and his business dealing in and with the United States, particularly in Maine, as well as general impressions during his visit in the late 18th century. They are calendared in Ruth Ann Fisher’s “Calendar of the Letters of Alexander Baring, 1795-1801” which is available in the Manuscript Reading Room, and linked below. The entire collection is reproduced onto one reel of microfilm.

The materials currently held in Canada are available on microfilm in the Manuscript Reading Room and can be accessed digitally on the Héritage Website maintained by the Canadian Research Knowledge Network. The container list below links the microfilm reels and description with links directly to digital content. The collection consists of correspondence, business records, and printed matter of the Baring Brothers company. The records chronicle Baring Brothers business dealings in Canada, as well as with the United States, Mexico, and South America.
