Foreign Copying Program: United Kingdom of Great Britain

British Manuscripts Project

In addition to the reproductions held in the Manuscript Division, there is a significant collection of microfilmed British archival materials available in the Microform Reading Room. Known as the British Manuscripts Project, the microfilm was created in 1941 with the support of the American Council of Learned Societies, in cooperation with the Library of Congress. The purpose of the project was to preserve the content in British repositories and to provide American scholars with important materials for research.

How to order reels from the British Manuscript Project:

Researchers should keep in mind that the British Manuscripts Project is distinct from the Manuscript Division's holdings. It may be beneficial to consult Manuscript Division finding aids in addition to the below-linked Checklist. Microfilm that forms the British Manuscripts Project holdings is stored offsite and must be requested in advance through the Microform Reading Room.

Researchers should first use the Checklist to identify the serial number of the desired reels:

Take note of the reel identifier at the end of each description in the Checklist:

Researchers should use these identifiers to request specific boxes of microfilm, which are listed in the catalog record for the microfilm (linked at the bottom of this page).

Note that 12 reels are stored in a box, and an entire box must be requested from the offsite location. These may be requested from the Microform Reading Room (and cannot be requested in the Manuscript Division).
