Gifts and Deposits (Domestic Records of the Public Record Office, Gifts, Deposits, Notes and Transcripts)

The Domestic Records of the Public Record Office, Gifts, Deposits, Notes, and Transcripts series consists of records that have been created by the Public Record Office, presented by private individuals, or deposited on loan. The Manuscript Division’s collection of reproductions from this series is composed of photostats, transcripts, and microfilm. This series consists of a wide variety of materials; selections from several individual series are held by the Manuscript Division and are described collectively and individually in the Library’s catalog, and enumerated in a shelflist.

PRO 13/20. List of all series of public records in the British Public Record Office (PRO), arranged under their departments (record groups) in order of their numerical references. Includes the series reference and title, covering dates and the number of the last piece in each series, and the location of the various series within the department in 1950. Includes annotations by Ruth Anna Fisher, archivist with the Library of Congress Foreign Copying Program.
Chatham family papers, 1747-1767.
PRO 30/8. Includes selections from bundles 73, 95, and 96. Correspondence, memorial, reports, and other papers relating chiefly to British military affairs in the colonies during the French and Indian War.
The papers of William Pitt the Younger
PRO 30/8. Private and official papers of William Pitt the Younger. Parts 1-3 consist of letters written or received by Pitt; Part 4 is composed of Pitt's official working papers, Army papers and Admiralty papers; Part 5 comprises papers treating Great Britain's revenue and finances; and Part 6 includes papers relating to Great Britain's role in North and South America, the West Indies, India, Africa, and other areas; as well as papers relating to Scotland, Ireland and Europe. Charles Cornwallis, Marquis Cornwallis, papers, 1614-1854.
PRO 30/11. Governor General of India and British army officer. Chiefly the official papers of the first Marquis Cornwallis, related principally to the Revolutionary War, 1780 to 1782, and to East Indian civil and military administration, 1786 to 1797. Other papers concern his mission to Flanders in 1794; his service as Master General of Ordnance, 1795 to 1798; and his role as Plenipotentiary to the Congress of Amiens, 1801 to 1802.
William Drogo Montagu, Duke of Manchester, papers, 1605-1647.
PRO 30/15. Contains document nos. 203-426, relating chiefly to the colonization of Virginia and Bermuda. Includes papers of Sir Nathaniel Rich.
Slave trade collection, 1861-1862.
PRO 30/22. Also includes selections from the Foreign Office 84 and 115 series, and additional correspondence between Lord John Russell and Lord Richard Bickerton Pemell Lyons relating to the slave trade.
Charles Wyndham, Earl of Egremont, papers, 1672-1769.
PRO 30/47. Selections concerning American affairs, especially during the Earl of Egremont's tenure as Secretary of State for the Southern Department. Contains information on the disposition of the British Army in America, 1761-1763, and on the consequences of peace in 1763.
Papers relating to the British Army in America, 1747-1783.
PRO 30/55. Guy Carleton, Baron of Dorchester, 1724-1808. Governor of Quebec and British army officer. Microfilm and Stevens' facsimiles of originals formerly in the Royal Institution, now in the Public Record Office (London). These papers comprise records of the British Army headquarters in America from 1775 to 1783. They represent the official notes of General Thomas Gage, Sir William Howe, Sir Henry Clinton, and Sir Guy Carleton as successive commanders-in-chief.
Transcripts from Venetian Archives, 1776-1784.
PRO 31/14/158. Selections from the Venetian state papers, America, Benjamin Franklin, volume 158. Chiefly letters from Venetian ambassadors to their government discussing Benjamin Franklin's activities in Paris and the American revolution. Includes a December 1784 letter from John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson to Venetian Ambassador Delfino. Selected by Rawdon Brown in 1868. Transcripts in Italian with numerous notes in English in the margins.
