Treasury

The reproductions of materials from the Treasury document the financial side of British colonial administration, while also reflecting the immense political power held by the Treasury Board. Included are some items relating to British-American relations in the post-colonial period.

Series T 1 consists of the Treasury Board papers and in-letters, as well as reports and drafts of minutes. The selections focus strongly on American matters. The National Archives provides advice on navigating its T 1 recordsExternal (the main record series for letters received, known as ‘in-letters’). T 1 does not contain letters sent by the Treasury to other government departments until the late 19th century.

Items of particular interest in the other series include the journal of William Blathwayt, surveyor and auditor general of American revenues, 1680-1717 (T 64), accounts for the relief of American Loyalists and sufferers by the cession of East Florida to Spain, 1789-1795 (T 50), and minute books, 1765-1784 (T 29).
