Bulgarian Newspaper Bibliographies

Below are sources that were used to verify bibliographic information for newspapers from Bulgaria. The first source consulted is the Library of Congress Online Catalog, but printed bibliographies also are useful. The most comprehensive print titles on this topic are the editions of Bulgarski periodichen pechat 1844-1944 and Bulgarski periodichen pechat 1944-1969, described below. For titles published after 1969, the other bibliographies below can be used to piece together some information, but no one bibliography suffices to cover the entire history of Bulgarian newspaper publishing.

Online catalogs usually are the best sources for the most current information. For Bulgaria, the most comprehensive source is the COBISS catalog External in Sofia, which is a combined online catalog of several libraries in Bulgaria, including the largest library—the National Library of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

This bibliography of Bulgarian newspapers and periodicals is the most comprehensive for the time period covered. It is a standard reference source for Bulgarian bibliography. The introductory materials in the first volume include a long article about the history of periodical publishing in Bulgaria beginning in 1844. The third volume has indexes for names, printers, publishing collectives, subjects, and place names with a chronological component. It also contains sections for single-issue papers, papers in foreign languages, and additions and corrections. This title is held in the Bulgarian reference collection in the European Reading Room.

There are indexes as well as statistical charts. The Library of Congress holds the volumes for 1953, 1954, and 1955.

There are indexes for title, broad subject area, and Universal Decimal Classification. This work is no longer published in print. The Library of Congress holds the volumes for 1968-1999.
