Bulgarian Newspapers in the Library of Congress

Online Newspapers from Bulgaria

National Photo Company. National Dance of Bulgaria. Between 1908 and 1919. Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Division.

The Library of Congress provides little historical depth in the Bulgarian digital news realm, but it does have access to relatively current selected articles of several news sources from Bulgaria via the databases described below. The databases must be used onsite in one of the Library of Congress buildings. The latest three months of three different news titles are available in PressReader and some content from newspapers and the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) are included in EMIS Intelligence. Most online news content from Bulgaria in the Library's databases are in English.

The most useful way to obtain the latest news and information in the vernacular from and about Bulgaria is to visit the websites of current Bulgarian newspapers. To find such sites use a portal such as and look for listings by subject. In this case, there is a listing for Media External which includes a section for newspapers (вестници). For information in English try using websites of major newspapers outside of the country such as the New York Times, the Times of London, or the Washington Post. The Library of Congress has these three, and many other English-language newspapers, in its subscription database collection.

Fortunately, some libraries have started to digitize historical Bulgarian newspapers and have made them freely available. Such sites are described below in the section on Digitized Newspapers. Digitized Bulgarian newspapers and journals from the 19th century are freely available at the Digital Library of the National Library of Bulgaria External. Titles include Tsarigradski vestnik, Bulgarski glas, Dunav, and Gaida, among others. A full list of the titles is given below. Many titles are also available at the site of the Varna Digital Library External produced by the Regional Library named after Pencho Slaveikov in Varna.

Subscription Databases

Subscription resources marked with a padlock are available to researchers on-site at the Library of Congress. If you are unable to visit the Library, you may be able to access these resources through your local public or academic library.

Digitized Newspapers

Unfortunately, only some newspapers from Bulgaria are freely available on the Internet. The sites are described below.
