Bulgarian Statistics: A Resource Guide

Special-Subject Statistics

Girl shepherdess with sheep, Bulgaria. [between ca. 1880 and 1924]. Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection. Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Division.

This section includes publications on selected special subjects -- agriculture, housing, and public finances. The decision to cover one subject, and not another, was made based on the strengths of the Library of Congress collections and on the desire to have more complete coverage of topics present in the censuses. For example, there are statistical sources for agriculture and housing in addition to what is found in the censuses. Statistics are produced on almost every subject, but listing and annotating all would be impossible.

If a subject of interest is not covered here, first consult Statisticheski godishnik [Statistical Yearbook], described in the section on National Level Statistics, to get some numbers. Also try searching the Library of Congress online catalog or WorldCat using subject headings such as "Public health -- Bulgaria -- Statistics -- Periodicals" or "Publishers and publishing -- Bulgaria -- Statistics." The pattern for the subject headings usually includes the words "Bulgaria" and "statistics."

The agricultural censuses are interspersed and described in the section on census publications, because their results are frequently published jointly with population and housing census results. Agricultural censuses in Bulgaria were conducted during every population census except 1881, 1885, 1985, and 1992; thus they exist for the following years: 1888, 1893, 1900, 1905, 1910, 1920, 1926, 1934, 1946, 1956, 1965, 1975, 2001. In addition, there were annual compilations of data on sown land and crops until 1993, and agricultural censuses separate from population censuses, such as in 2003 and 2010. More data can be found on the website of the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry External, which has current information on various topics related to agriculture.  A brief description of the website appears in the section titled "Online Resources." The Ministry publishes a bulletin and an annual report, both of which contain many statistics in this field of study. Listed below are non-census sources for agricultural statistics.

The housing censuses are interspersed, and described, in the section above, on census publications, because their results are usually published jointly with population census results. Housing censuses were conducted during every population census except 1946, thus they exist for the following years: 1881 (just dwellings, not a real housing census), 1888, 1893, 1900, 1905, 1910, 1920, 1926, 1934, 1956, 1965, 1975, 1985, 1992, 2001, and 2011. Besides the housing census publications, several additional publications are presented below. To find other works in this area, search the Library of Congress online catalog or WorldCat using subject headings such as "Housing -- Bulgaria -- Statistics" or "Housing surveys -- Bulgaria -- Statistics."

This section is devoted to government finances, such as the annual federal budgets and the financial situation of the state treasury. Some of these figures also appear in Statisticheski godishnik [Statistical Yearbook]. This kind of data is usually produced by the Ministry of Finance or the Bulgarian National Bank, not the national statistical agency. This guide annotates important publications related to public finance during the pre- and post-communist eras, but little for the communist period, when Bulgaria was a planned economy. For the post-communist era, the website of the Bulgarian National Bank External is very useful, because it has government-related financial data about government debt and accounts, including some information for municipal public finances. Most publications of the Bulgarian National Bank will not be discussed in this guide, because its activities regarding public finance are only one part of its many functions. Because it holds so much information on this topic, the Ministry of Finance External website is annotated in the section entitled "Online Resources."
