United States representative and senator from Rhode Island on the Senate Finance Committee as well as a financier and philanthropist. The Aldrich–Vreeland Act in 1908 established the National Monetary Commission which issued many report including the Aldrich Plan which became the basis of the Federal Reserve system. Mr. Aldrich sponsored and headed the Commission and the collection includes letters sent and received by staff members of the Commission.

Work, school, and leisure activities in the United States from 1894 to 1915 are featured in this presentation of 150 motion pictures, 62 of which also appear in other online collections. Highlights include films of the United States Postal Service from 1903, cattle breeding, fire fighters, ice manufacturing, logging, calisthenic and gymnastic exercises in schools, amusement parks, boxing, expositions, football, parades, swimming, and other sporting events.

The American Archive of Public Broadcasting (a collaboration between the Library of Congress and WGBH in Boston) launched the Wall $treet Week with Louis Rukeyser Collection, currently featuring 167 episodes from the financial news series that ran from 1970 until 2002. The collection includes interviews with: futures analyst Karen P. Gibbs; Paul Volcker in 1975, at the time the head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York; Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman; Akio Morita, co-founder of Sony; Steve Jobs in 1996, before he returned to Apple; Walter E. Williams, Professor of Economics at George Mason University; and Sir John Marks Templeton, called the best long-term investor in history.

Elected union officers' reports for twenty-four active and twenty-three inactive labor unions, issued 1897 to 1980, with some updates through 1988. The officers' reports are generally compiled and distributed before a union's convention, to inform the members and delegates of the "state of the union": contract negotiations and settlements; employment, wages and working conditions; benefits; administration, jurisdiction and finance; organizing and legislative activities; strikes and mergers; relations with other unions, and so on.

Nathan Appleton was an American merchant and politician who introduced the power loom and the manufacture of cotton on a large scale into the United States. He and others later purchased the water-power at Pawtucket Falls, and he was one of the founders of the Merrimac Manufacturing Company. He also worked as American agent for "Compagnie universelle du canal interocéanique de Panama", a French company attempting to build a canal across Panama. Correspondence, notes, autobiography, speeches and writings are a part of this collection.

Emile Berliner was a German-born American inventor responsible for the gramophone, the flat disc recording, the radio microphone, acoustic tile, and an early version of the helicopter. He also founded the Berliner Gramophone Company in 1895, the Gramophone Company in London, England, in 1897, Deutsche Grammophon in Hanover, Germany, in 1898 and Berliner Gram-o-phone Company of Canada in Montreal in 1899.

Beyer was a consulting engineer and labor-management relations specialist. The 30,000 items of his papers span the years 1915-48 with most dating after 1929. During World War I, Beyer developed a successful program of union-management cooperation at army arsenals. Following the war, he worked as a consulting engineer for various unions, industrial firms, and railroads. During the New Deal, he served as labor relations consultant to Tennessee Valley Authority, chairman of the National Mediation Board, and member of the War Manpower Commission. His papers reflect his involvement in a wide variety of strikes, lockouts, and personnel disputes.

Ephraim Blaine was an army officer and merchant, of Carlisle, PA who made a fortune trading with Native American tribes after the French & Indian War and Pontiac's War. He served as commissary of supplies, deputy commissary-general and commissary-general for purchases for the Continental Army. In that last position, Blaine helped feed the Army, arranging food deliveries, and often having to advance his own money for payment.

Borah was a U.S. senator from Idaho during the years 1907-1940. His papers contain a limited amount of material on Idaho labor matters, federal labor legislation, and the post-World War I Red Scare. The Library's Borah papers span the years 1905-40, with most material dating after 1912. The collection contains little regarding Borah's prosecution of William Haywood of the Western Federation of Miners for conspiracy to murder an Idaho governor. The Idaho State Historical Society houses a collection of papers relating to Borah's activities from 1890 to 1907.

The Bostwick Company records consist of the business records of William Bostwick (1796-1863), merchant of Augusta, Georgia, and New Haven, Connecticut, including records of firms with which he was associated and their antecedents. The firms represented are: Edward Campfield & Co., John Burton, Burton & Bostwick, Banks & Baird, and Bostwick & Baird, the last-named becoming the firm of William Bostwick in 1832. These firms were located in Augusta, Georgia, and were primarily engaged in the cotton business. Records include an account book, cash books, cotton books, day books, inventories, ledgers, and other similar company record books.

George Boutwell served as Secrtary of the Treasury from March 12, 1869 to March 16, 1873 and was first Commissioner of Internal Revenue under President Abraham Lincoln. He was also Governor of Massachusetts and also served in the House of Representatives and United States Senate.

She was active in the National League of Republican Colored Women, and the National Association of Wage Earners, working to influence legislation related to wages for domestic workers and other positions held by women. The collection includes correspondence, financial records, memoranda, notebooks, speeches and writings, subscription and literature orders.

Gerhard Colm was Chief Economist of the National Planning Association and served as a leading economic adviser for both the Roosevelt and Truman administrations. In 1939 he was named by Secretary of Commerce Harry L. Hopkins as Fiscal and Financial expert of the new industrial economics division of that department. In this capacity Colm developed national income estimates for economic planning. Colm became principal fiscal analyst of the Bureau of the Budget and assistant chief of the division. In addition, Colm lectured at George Washington University from 1940-1962 and served the U.S. government on many special economic missions to foreign countries.

The core of the Jay Cooke Papers relates to banking and finance, but the family's influence and correspondence relate to every aspect of American metropolitan society. Jay Cooke formed a partnership, Jay Cooke & Co in Philadelphia, and opened branch offices in New York, Washington, and London. Jay Cook & Co. sold bond-issues to support the Union war effort. In addition the company was involved in the foundation of the National Banking system, setting up insurance companies, trading in stocks and gold, subsidizing and constructing railroads, and acquiring land and mines. Their ill-fated involvement in the subsidy and construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad contributed to the financial panic of 1873.

Statistician and educator know as an early innovator of business management using statistical methods. He held jobs at the United States Bureau of the Budget and Bureau of the Census as well as George Washington University, New York University, and the United States Department of Agriculture Graduate School. He spent time in Japan assisting with the designing the 1951 Japanese census and developed a strong relationship with the Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) which established the Deming Prize. He later published Quality, Productivity, and Competitive Position (renamed Out of the Crisis) and The New Economics for Industry, Government, Education. He developed what was his "Deming System of Profound Knowledge" and was known as a proponent of what became the Deming cycle called the "Plan-Do-Check-Act" cycle.

This is a digitized collection of this titles for the years 1900-1924 (older editions will be added later). The organization of the title and the information included have changed throughout its publication history, but generally speaking, the business entries are organized alphabetically by state or territory, and then city/county, with sections on Canada, alphabetically by province, located at the end of the volumes.
Each edition is usually 2 parts (there are a few with 3) and they key (when there is one) is usually in part 1 in the first few pages (1914-1918 may not have keys).
TIPS
Change the view to either Gallery or Grid (top and right of the results).
To move though the volume faster, change the number of results known to the maximum number (bottom of the results on the right).
Look for the maps of the state. The maps are the first part of the entry and provide an easier way to find the state.
To move though a states entry, look at the text below the image; it may provide just enough text to let you know where in the state you are.
Once you are in an image if you need to move more than one page ahead use the Image pulldown at the top left of the image to move to particular pages.

The materials, drawn from the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library at Duke University, include cookbooks, photographs of billboards, print advertisements, trade cards, calendars, almanacs, and leaflets for a multitude of products. Together, they illuminate the early evolution of this most ubiquitous feature of modern American business and culture. It should be noted that these primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Emigrant Savings Bank was established in New York City in 1850 by the Irish Emigrant Society, an organization founded for the protection of immigrants from Ireland. This collection consists of selected records of the bank, particularly records pertaining to the Irish Emigrant Society, and data about the bank's depositors and borrowers. Society and bank records document the social history of Irish immigrants on either side of the Atlantic. Bank records contain information about deposit accounts, real estate, buildings and investments.

It contains data from about 150 users, mostly senior management of Enron, organized into folders. The corpus contains a total of about 0.5M messages. This data was originally made public, and posted to the web, by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission during its investigation.

He is remembered as one of the greatest business minds and salesmen of the 20th century for guiding and remaining at the helm of Coca-Cola International for over 30 years. He was one of the people responsible for the company's global expansion as a quasi-government agency in World War II.

Frey headed the Metal Trades Department of the AFL from 1934 to 1950. His papers total 28,000 items and include extensive correspondence and subject files dealing with all aspects of the trade union movements. Frey developed extensive files on topics of special interest, including concentration in the banking industry, craft unionism versus industrial unionism, Communism, and the Communist role in the CIO. The papers include Frey's "Trade Union Experiences," a manuscript narrating the development of the AFL.

Edward Frost was a planter, businessman, state legislator, and district attorney for South Carolina. This collection includes political, legal, and business records, appointments, wills, estate and plantation accounts, ledgers, and memorabilia relating to Frost's service as district attorney and states' rights delegate from Charleston to the South Carolina legislature and his interest in the Blue Ridge Railroad Company where he served as president.

Duff Green was a journalist, politician, as well as an entrepreneur, and industrial promoter. In 1825, in Washington, D.C., he bought and later edited, The United States Telegraph, which became the principal organ of Andrew Jackson's backers in the presidential election of 1828 and member of Andrew Jackson's "Kitchen Cabinet." He was engaged in railway building in Georgia and Alabama and was also one of the founding associates in the incorporation of the New Mexican Railway Company. Duff Green was one of the founding members of the Pennsylvania Fiscal Agency, incorporated Nov 1, 1859 in Pennsylvania.

Gruen was an architect and early pioneer in the design of the shopping mall. Wrote a number of books including: Shopping Towns USA: The Planning of Shopping Centers and Centers for the Urban Environment: Survival of the Cities. Personal and business correspondence, project files, speeches, writings, biographical material, and scrapbooks documenting Gruen's career in architectural design, city planning, and environmental counseling, with special emphasis on architectural and land use projects undertaken from 1960 to 1980 by his firms, Gruen Associates. The firm's efforts to revitalize the central business districts of Fort Worth, Tex., Rochester, N.Y., Kalamazoo, Mich., Boston, Mass., Fresno, Calif., Urbana, Ill., and other American and European cities are also documented. Averell Harriman was a diplomat, entrepreneur and politician who established W.A. Harriman & Co a banking business in 1922. This later turned into the highly successful Wall Street firm Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. after being joined by his brother Roland and merging with Brown Bros. & Co. He was the 11th Secretary of Commerce of the United States under President Truman. The collection includes correspondence, family papers, business records, and other papers documenting Harriman's career in business, finance, politics, and public service.

Hines held a variety of union and public posts. His papers (13,800 items) are especially useful for studying Pennsylvania labor politics in the 1930s. Hines supported Republicans through the 1930s and Wendell Willkie in 1940. He vigorously opposed the CIO and Communism, and his files document his close attention to the CIO and his effort as head of Pennsylvania's Department of Labor and Industry to discharge those aligned with the Communist-led CIO union of state employees. His files for his tenure as national AFL legislative representative (1943-49) deal with the AFL's interest in conscription, veterans' benefits, wage and price controls, labor standards, health insurance, and the Taft-Hartley Act. Files for his later career as AFL special representative (1949-58) include material on the importation of farm labor.

The bulk of material in the Frank Kameny Papers dates from
1957 to 1996 after his dismissal as an astronomer from the United States Army Map Service on charges of homosexuality.
Following an unsuccessful legal appeal for reinstatement of government employment which was petitioned to the United
States Supreme Court, Kameny became one of the founders of the Mattachine Society of Washington and would help initiate other cases regarding discrimination in employment based on sexuality. Access restricted.

The collection consists primarily of court memoranda and depositions, correspondence, notes, news clippings, and other related documents concerning Krc’s lawsuit with the United States Information Agency (USIA). s. Krc viewed this reassignment as a result of the USIA learning of his sexual orientation, and sought to legally dispute this discrimination. Through help from Frank Kameny, he was put in contact with the American Civil Liberties Union, who agreed to represent Krc and began a legal battle that ultimately lasted ten years before ending with a denial for a hearing from the United States Supreme Court.

The railway system was formed in 1869 by the merger of four railroads, the Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana Railroad Company; the Cleveland and Toledo Railroad Company; the Cleveland, Painesville, and Ashtabula Rail Road Company; and the Buffalo & Erie Rail Road. In 1914 it was merged into the New York Central system. The line was controlled by the Vanderbilt family and eventually connected to the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad to create a totally controlled railroad linking New York City with Chicago. This collection consists entirely of financial records of the Lake Shore System. The records include daybooks, ledgers, journals, stock ledgers and listings of stock transfers. These materials contain information on the types of supplies used by the railroads, salaries paid to various personnel, and names of individuals and companies that invested in the railroad industry.

Lamb Studios are unprocessed, or not yet prepared and organized for regular service but there is an online presentation of nearly 2,500 preparatory and study sketches for stained glass windows, murals, mosaics, furnishings, metalwork, and interior architecture from the Lamb Studios Archive affords unique insights into changing aesthetics and artistic practices in the United States. Newman, a prominent labor lawyer, was the lead attorney for a series of suits in the 1970s and 1980s that attempted to expand the requirements of "equal pay for equal work" in racial and sexual discrimination cases to cover jobs that were unlike but of "equal worth." The Newman papers contain the case files for these "pay equity" cases brought in New York, Michigan, California, the state of Washington, and elsewhere. Several of the suits involved public employers, and the case files contain detailed historical records of civil service job classification and pay setting procedures obtained by discovery motions. Randolph's long career as a labor and civil rights leader is documented in the 13,000 items of his papers. In addition to correspondence, speeches, and writings, Randolph's papers contain subject files on the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and the U.S. Fair Employment Practice Committee, as well as material regarding his interest in the treatment of black members by various unions. The papers include files on the March on Washington Movement, the Negro American Labor Council, the Socialist Party, and the National Negro Congress. Microfilm edition anticipated.

Rauh, a labor lawyer, leading liberal, and civil rights activist, was attorney for the United Auto Workers in the 1950s. His papers contain extensive files concerning UAW legal affairs and his work for many other union clients. Rauh's files also document his legal work on behalf of the Edward Sadlowski insurgency in the United Steel Workers and on behalf of the anti- Tony Boyle caucus of the United Mine Workers in the 1970s. Digital Collection
The collection consists of a uniform series of large-scale maps, dating from 1867 to the present and depicting the commercial, industrial, and residential sections of some twelve thousand cities and towns in the United States, Canada, and Mexico and were designed to assist fire insurance agents in determining the degree of hazard associated with a particular property. The Library has the print volumes (accessed via the reading room) as well as these digitized versions and via the database Digital Sanborn Maps, 1867-1970.
The online collection has a checklist is based upon the Library's 1981 publication Fire Insurance Maps in the Library of Congress and will be continually updated to reflect new acquisitions. The online checklist also contains links to existing digital images from our collection and will be updated as new images are added.

Lewis B. Schwellenbach was a United States Senator from Washington, a jurist, lawyer, and a United States Secretary of Labor. He changed the Labor Department from a department primarily interested in statistical information gathering to a policy-making department, actively trying to conciliate labor with management and promote a high-wage economy based on unionized labor.

The Sifton papers (15,550 items) contain files on Paul Sifton's work as national legislative representative for the United Auto Workers (1948-62). Also documents his work in the 1930s in New York's unemployment compensation system and the U.S. Wages and Hours Division. Other files cover his post-1941 activities with the National Farmers' Union, the Union for Democratic Action, and the War Manpower Commission. The Siftons's papers also contain a number of playscripts for social dramas authored by one or both of them. Present as well is an unfinished exposé of John L. Lewis written by Paul Sifton.

During the American Revolution, Nathaniel Shaw was a leading shipping merchant of New London, Connecticut. His vessels were engaged regularly in West Indies trade, shipping, lumber, cattle and other provisions to the islands and bringing back sugar and molasses. An active partisan for the colonies, he was appointed as a naval agent for the Continental Congress in 1776 and acted as agent of the Colony (Connecticut) for naval supplies and taking care of sick seamen.

Included here are ships' journals, invoices, manifests, lists of crews, clearance papers and other documents related to shipping chiefly from Connecticut ports in the 18th and 19th centuries. There is a small quantity of papers from Massachusetts, New York and elsewhere.

Of note is record of hire of the brigantine Ranger by the Continental Navy. Correspondents include Chester A. Arthur, Salmon P. Chase, John A. Dix, William Pitt Fessenden, John Mason, Hugh McCulloch, Stephen Pleasonton, and Richard Rush. Records of the U.S. Dept. of the Treasury were assembled by Manuscript Division staff from numerous accessions of Dept. of the Treasury records received by the Library of Congress from the Dept. of the Treasury and other sources over several years. Many of the records in this collection had previously been identified and cataloged by the Division as separate collections, which have since been brought together administratively to form this collection of Dept. of the Treasury records.

The Westinghouse Works Collection contains 21 actuality films showing various views of Westinghouse companies, which were produced by the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company from April 13 to May 16, 1904, and were photographed by G. W. (Billy) Bitzer. Most prominently featured are the Westinghouse Air Brake Company, the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, and the Westinghouse Machine Company. The films were intended to showcase the company's operations. Exterior and interior shots of the factories are shown along with scenes of male and female workers performing their duties at the plants.

Davenport spent most of his life in the pursuit of commerce, particularly overseas trade. In company with William Whaley and others, he began investing in trading ventures with an interest in the African trade and became a slave trader. The Russian-American Company records, once part of the personal library of Gennadiĭ Vasilʹevich Yudin (1840-1912), date from 1783 to 1830. The Russian-American Company was a joint stock company chartered in 1799 by Paul I of Russia, the son and heir of Catherine the Great. The company resulted from a consolidation of several Russian companies founded earlier in the eighteenth century to trade in Alaskan furs. Gregorii Shelikhov (1747-1795), a founder of the Russian-American Company, had been a principal in several of these predecessor companies, including the partnership he founded in 1781 with merchant Ivan Golikov. Shelikhov’s widow, Natalia Alekseeva Shelikhova, took over management of the company after his death and obtained the charter from Paul I.
The Company, based in Irkutsk, Siberia, established a headquarters at New Archangel (today Sitka, Alaska), from which it traded in furs with the local people, established religious missions, and sought to establish Russian colonial settlements on America’s northwest coast. The company also had an interest in trade with the Far East, including Japan.
