United States representative and senator from Rhode Island on the Senate Finance Committee as well as a financier and philanthropist. The Aldrich–Vreeland Act in 1908 established the National Monetary Commission which issued many report including the Aldrich Plan which became the basis of the Federal Reserve system. Mr. Aldrich sponsored and headed the Commission and the collection includes letters sent and received by staff members of the Commission.

Work, school, and leisure activities in the United States from 1894 to 1915 are featured in this presentation of 150 motion pictures, 62 of which also appear in other online collections. Highlights include films of the United States Postal Service from 1903, cattle breeding, fire fighters, ice manufacturing, logging, calisthenic and gymnastic exercises in schools, amusement parks, boxing, expositions, football, parades, swimming, and other sporting events.

The American Archive of Public Broadcasting (a collaboration between the Library of Congress and WGBH in Boston) launched the Wall $treet Week with Louis Rukeyser Collection, currently featuring 167 episodes from the financial news series that ran from 1970 until 2002. The collection includes interviews with: futures analyst Karen P. Gibbs; Paul Volcker in 1975, at the time the head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York; Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman; Akio Morita, co-founder of Sony; Steve Jobs in 1996, before he returned to Apple; Walter E. Williams, Professor of Economics at George Mason University; and Sir John Marks Templeton, called the best long-term investor in history.

Elected union officers' reports for twenty-four active and twenty-three inactive labor unions, issued 1897 to 1980, with some updates through 1988. The officers' reports are generally compiled and distributed before a union's convention, to inform the members and delegates of the "state of the union": contract negotiations and settlements; employment, wages and working conditions; benefits; administration, jurisdiction and finance; organizing and legislative activities; strikes and mergers; relations with other unions, and so on.

Nathan Appleton was an American merchant and politician who introduced the power loom and the manufacture of cotton on a large scale into the United States. He and others later purchased the water-power at Pawtucket Falls, and he was one of the founders of the Merrimac Manufacturing Company. He also worked as American agent for "Compagnie universelle du canal interocéanique de Panama", a French company attempting to build a canal across Panama. Correspondence, notes, autobiography, speeches and writings are a part of this collection.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is the major British federation of labor unions, serving as a central coordinating agency for British unions since 1868, and acting as a major link between the unions and government, during this century.
Among the items filmed from the TUC archives for this collection are its quarterly reports up to 1918, open letters, addresses, and records of debates in Parliament, as well as pamphlets and reports on organizing, on working conditions, and on labor's role in government, in foreign affairs, in worker education, and in defense policy and disarmament. Arranged chronologically, many of the pamphlets are personally authored by Sir Walter M. Citrine, leader for many years of the TUC.

Emile Berliner was a German-born American inventor responsible for the gramophone, the flat disc recording, the radio microphone, acoustic tile, and an early version of the helicopter. He also founded the Berliner Gramophone Company in 1895, the Gramophone Company in London, England, in 1897, Deutsche Grammophon in Hanover, Germany, in 1898 and Berliner Gram-o-phone Company of Canada in Montreal in 1899.

Beyer was a consulting engineer and labor-management relations specialist. The 30,000 items of his papers span the years 1915-48 with most dating after 1929. During World War I, Beyer developed a successful program of union-management cooperation at army arsenals. Following the war, he worked as a consulting engineer for various unions, industrial firms, and railroads. During the New Deal, he served as labor relations consultant to Tennessee Valley Authority, chairman of the National Mediation Board, and member of the War Manpower Commission. His papers reflect his involvement in a wide variety of strikes, lockouts, and personnel disputes.

Documents the northward migration of black workers and their families at the time of the first World War, through the records of several wartime agencies, including the U. S. Railroad Administration, the U. S. Shipping Board, the U.S. Housing Corporation, the National War Labor Board, the U. S. Conciliation Service, and the Women's Bureau of the Department of Labor. The files include records on early race riots in places such as Houston, Omaha, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. Other records contain evidence of discrimination faced by black Americans in the workplace, in housing, and other areas of their lives. Other agencies whose records are included in this collection are the War Labor Policies Board, the War Department, the Division of Negro Economics of the Labor Department, the Departments of Justice and Agriculture, the U.S. Children's Bureau, the U.S. Coal Commission, as well as others.

Ephraim Blaine was an army officer and merchant, of Carlisle, PA who made a fortune trading with Native American tribes after the French & Indian War and Pontiac's War. He served as commissary of supplies, deputy commissary-general and commissary-general for purchases for the Continental Army. In that last position, Blaine helped feed the Army, arranging food deliveries, and often having to advance his own money for payment.

Borah was a U.S. senator from Idaho during the years 1907-1940. His papers contain a limited amount of material on Idaho labor matters, federal labor legislation, and the post-World War I Red Scare. The Library's Borah papers span the years 1905-40, with most material dating after 1912. The collection contains little regarding Borah's prosecution of William Haywood of the Western Federation of Miners for conspiracy to murder an Idaho governor. The Idaho State Historical Society houses a collection of papers relating to Borah's activities from 1890 to 1907.

The Bostwick Company records consist of the business records of William Bostwick (1796-1863), merchant of Augusta, Georgia, and New Haven, Connecticut, including records of firms with which he was associated and their antecedents. The firms represented are: Edward Campfield & Co., John Burton, Burton & Bostwick, Banks & Baird, and Bostwick & Baird, the last-named becoming the firm of William Bostwick in 1832. These firms were located in Augusta, Georgia, and were primarily engaged in the cotton business. Records include an account book, cash books, cotton books, day books, inventories, ledgers, and other similar company record books.

George Boutwell served as Secrtary of the Treasury from March 12, 1869 to March 16, 1873 and was first Commissioner of Internal Revenue under President Abraham Lincoln. He was also Governor of Massachusetts and also served in the House of Representatives and United States Senate.

It merged in 1978 with the Brotherhood of Railway and Airline Clerks (BRAC), now known as the Transportation Communications International Union. Nannie Helen Burroughs was an African-American businesswoman, educator, orator, and religious leader. In 1909 she founded the National Training School for Women and Girls in Washington, D.C.. She was active in the National League of Republican Colored Women, and the National Association of Wage Earners, working to influence legislation related to wages for domestic workers and other positions held by women. The collection includes correspondence, financial records, memoranda, notebooks, speeches and writings, subscription and literature orders.

Stuart Chase was an American economist, engineer and author. This collection includes drafts and manuscripts of books and writings, notes, reports, book reviews, contracts, and other papers pertaining to Chase's contributions to economics and social policy, especially as a member of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's "brain trust." It has been suggested that he was the originator of the expression a New Deal, which became identified with the economic programs of said American president Roosevelt.

The collection documents his work as trustee of the Institute of Current World Affairs and member of the Board of Research Associates in American Economic History of the Carnegie Institution of Washington among others. Gerhard Colm was Chief Economist of the National Planning Association and served as a leading economic adviser for both the Roosevelt and Truman administrations. In 1939 he was named by Secretary of Commerce Harry L. Hopkins as Fiscal and Financial expert of the new industrial economics division of that department. In this capacity Colm developed national income estimates for economic planning. Colm became principal fiscal analyst of the Bureau of the Budget and assistant chief of the division. In addition, Colm lectured at George Washington University from 1940-1962 and served the U.S. government on many special economic missions to foreign countries.

The core of the Jay Cooke Papers relates to banking and finance, but the family's influence and correspondence relate to every aspect of American metropolitan society. Jay Cooke formed a partnership, Jay Cooke & Co in Philadelphia, and opened branch offices in New York, Washington, and London. Jay Cook & Co. sold bond-issues to support the Union war effort. In addition the company was involved in the foundation of the National Banking system, setting up insurance companies, trading in stocks and gold, subsidizing and constructing railroads, and acquiring land and mines. Their ill-fated involvement in the subsidy and construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad contributed to the financial panic of 1873.

Statistician and educator know as an early innovator of business management using statistical methods. He held jobs at the United States Bureau of the Budget and Bureau of the Census as well as George Washington University, New York University, and the United States Department of Agriculture Graduate School. He spent time in Japan assisting with the designing the 1951 Japanese census and developed a strong relationship with the Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) which established the Deming Prize. He later published Quality, Productivity, and Competitive Position (renamed Out of the Crisis) and The New Economics for Industry, Government, Education. He developed what was his "Deming System of Profound Knowledge" and was known as a proponent of what became the Deming cycle called the "Plan-Do-Check-Act" cycle.

This is a digitized collection of this titles through 1924 (newer editions will be added later).
The organization of the title and the information included have changed throughout its publication history, but generally speaking, the business entries are organized alphabetically by state or territory, and then city/county, with sections on Canada, alphabetically by province, located at the end of the volumes.
Each edition is usually 2 parts (there are a few with 3) and they key (when there is one) is usually in part 1 in the first few pages (1914-1918 may not have keys).
TIPS
Change the view to either Gallery or Grid (top and right of the results).
To move though the volume faster, change the number of results known to the maximum number (bottom of the results on the right).
Look for the maps of the state. The maps are the first part of the entry and provide an easier way to find the state.
To move though a states entry, look at the text below the image; it may provide just enough text to let you know where in the state you are.

This online collection presented over 9,000 images relating to the early history of advertising in the United States. It can be viewed at Duke, but the site has been archived (links in the record). The materials, drawn from the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library at Duke University, include cookbooks, photographs of billboards, print advertisements, trade cards, calendars, almanacs, and leaflets for a multitude of products. Together, they illuminate the early evolution of this most ubiquitous feature of modern American business and culture. The Emigrant Savings Bank was established in New York City in 1850 by the Irish Emigrant Society, an organization founded for the protection of immigrants from Ireland. This collection consists of selected records of the bank, particularly records pertaining to the Irish Emigrant Society, and data about the bank's depositors and borrowers. Society and bank records document the social history of Irish immigrants on either side of the Atlantic. Bank records contain information about deposit accounts, real estate, buildings and investments.

Duff Green was a journalist, politician, as well as an entrepreneur, and industrial promoter. In 1825, in Washington, D.C., he bought and later edited, The United States Telegraph, which became the principal organ of Andrew Jackson's backers in the presidential election of 1828 and member of Andrew Jackson's "Kitchen Cabinet." He was engaged in railway building in Georgia and Alabama and was also one of the founding associates in the incorporation of the New Mexican Railway Company. Duff Green was one of the founding members of the Pennsylvania Fiscal Agency, incorporated Nov 1, 1859 in Pennsylvania.

Hines held a variety of union and public posts. His papers (13,800 items) are especially useful for studying Pennsylvania labor politics in the 1930s. Hines supported Republicans through the 1930s and Wendell Willkie in 1940. He vigorously opposed the CIO and Communism, and his files document his close attention to the CIO and his effort as head of Pennsylvania's Department of Labor and Industry to discharge those aligned with the Communist-led CIO union of state employees. His files for his tenure as national AFL legislative representative (1943-49) deal with the AFL's interest in conscription, veterans' benefits, wage and price controls, labor standards, health insurance, and the Taft-Hartley Act. Files for his later career as AFL special representative (1949-58) include material on the importation of farm labor.

Frederick Cecil Horner was a transportation engineer and executive with General Motors Corporation. These are personal and business files consisting of correspondence, diaries, memoir, memoranda, reports, speeches, printed matter, newspaper clippings, and photographs documenting Horner's career in transportation, chiefly as a General Motors executive. The collection reflects the development of motor truck and bus transportation in the United States and abroad and efforts to coordinate these modes with railroad transport.

1957 to 1996 after his dismissal as an astronomer from the United States Army Map Service on charges of homosexuality.
Following an unsuccessful legal appeal for reinstatement of government employment which was petitioned to the United
States Supreme Court, Kameny became one of the founders of the Mattachine Society of Washington and would help initiate other cases regarding discrimination in employment based on sexuality. Access restricted.

The collection consists primarily of court memoranda and depositions, correspondence, notes, news clippings, and other related documents concerning Krc’s lawsuit with the United States Information Agency (USIA). s. Krc viewed this reassignment as a result of the USIA learning of his sexual orientation, and sought to legally dispute this discrimination. Through help from Frank Kameny, he was put in contact with the American Civil Liberties Union, who agreed to represent Krc and began a legal battle that ultimately lasted ten years before ending with a denial for a hearing from the United States Supreme Court.

This collection includes the papers of Wisconsin governor and U.S. senator Robert M. La Follette, Sr., U.S. senator Robert M. La Follette, Jr., Wisconsin governor Philip F. La Follette, other La Follette family members, and the records, 1911-12, of the National Progressive Republican League. The papers contain extensive correspondence on political and legislative matters with numerous trade union officials and progressive politicians as well as extensive files on labor legislation.

The railway system was formed in 1869 by the merger of four railroads, the Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana Railroad Company; the Cleveland and Toledo Railroad Company; the Cleveland, Painesville, and Ashtabula Rail Road Company; and the Buffalo & Erie Rail Road. In 1914 it was merged into the New York Central system. The line was controlled by the Vanderbilt family and eventually connected to the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad to create a totally controlled railroad linking New York City with Chicago. This collection consists entirely of financial records of the Lake Shore System. The records include daybooks, ledgers, journals, stock ledgers and listings of stock transfers. These materials contain information on the types of supplies used by the railroads, salaries paid to various personnel, and names of individuals and companies that invested in the railroad industry.

The business records related to J. and R. Lamb Studios are unprocessed, or not yet prepared and organized for regular service but there is an online presentation of nearly 2,500 preparatory and study sketches for stained glass windows, murals, mosaics, furnishings, metalwork, and interior architecture from the Lamb Studios Archive affords unique insights into changing aesthetics and artistic practices in the United States. The sketches, created from the 1860s to the 1990s, primarily for churches, synagogues, and other sacred spaces.

Later President Calvin Coolidge named him as chairman of the Federal Farm Loan Board and in 1930 was appointed Chairman of the Federal Reserve where he served until 1933. During World War II he served on the National Defense Mediation Board and after the war was the 1st president of the World Bank. Newman, a prominent labor lawyer, was the lead attorney for a series of suits in the 1970s and 1980s that attempted to expand the requirements of "equal pay for equal work" in racial and sexual discrimination cases to cover jobs that were unlike but of "equal worth." The Newman papers contain the case files for these "pay equity" cases brought in New York, Michigan, California, the state of Washington, and elsewhere. Several of the suits involved public employers, and the case files contain detailed historical records of civil service job classification and pay setting procedures obtained by discovery motions. American Folklife Center
The collection consists of manuscripts, sound recordings, photographs, artifacts, publications, and ephemera from an ethnographic field project conducted by the American Folklife Center, Library of Congress, which documented occupational culture in Paterson, New Jersey in 1994. Subjects include the textile industry, industrial architecture, machine shops, labor unions, family owned businesses, dressmaking, and ethnic restaurants. A single manufacturing firm, Watson Machine International, was the focus of an in-depth study. The project focused on the ways in which community life and values are shaped by work and how the theme of work intersects with other themes, namely family, ethnicity, gender, neighborhood, religion, and change over time.

The agency directed by the Pinkerton family to protect interests of clients in business and industry. The records include business and family correspondence, biographical and genealogical records, administrative records such as procedural guidelines and training manuals, and criminal case files which include correspondence, reports, photographs, legal documents, and printed matter. Some of the letterpress copybooks held by the Library are part of the Gale Primary Sources database.

assembles a wide array of Library of Congress source materials from the 1920s that document the widespread prosperity of the Coolidge years, the nation's transition to a mass consumer economy, and the role of government in this transition. The collection includes nearly 150 selections from twelve collections of personal papers and two collections of institutional papers from the Manuscript Division; 74 books, pamphlets, and legislative documents from the General Collections, along with selections from 34 consumer and trade journals; 185 photographs from the Prints and Photographs Division and the Manuscript Division; and 5 short films and 7 audio selections of Coolidge speeches from the Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division. The collection is particularly strong in advertising and mass-marketing materials and will be of special interest to those seeking to understand economic and political forces at work in the 1920s.

Similar in some respects to Publishers Trade List Annual, this collection provides considerably broader scope, since it does not charge publishers for inclusion, and therefore publishes both a greater number and more complete catalogs. Approximately 2,000 catalogs are included each year in this microform collection, about four times the number in PTLA. Small and specialized publishers are well represented in the collection.
Each year's guide consists of an alphabetic index and an index of publishers by subject. The microfiches themselves are arranged alphabetically.

His papers contain extensive files concerning UAW legal affairs and his work for many other union clients. Rauh's files also document his legal work on behalf of the Edward Sadlowski insurgency in the United Steel Workers and on behalf of the anti- Tony Boyle caucus of the United Mine Workers in the 1970s. Lewis B. Schwellenbach was a United States Senator from Washington, a jurist, lawyer, and a United States Secretary of Labor. He changed the Labor Department from a department primarily interested in statistical information gathering to a policy-making department, actively trying to conciliate labor with management and promote a high-wage economy based on unionized labor.

During the American Revolution, Nathaniel Shaw was a leading shipping merchant of New London, Connecticut. His vessels were engaged regularly in West Indies trade, shipping, lumber, cattle and other provisions to the islands and bringing back sugar and molasses. An active partisan for the colonies, he was appointed as a naval agent for the Continental Congress in 1776 and acted as agent of the Colony (Connecticut) for naval supplies and taking care of sick seamen.

The Sifton papers (15,550 items) contain files on Paul Sifton's work as national legislative representative for the United Auto Workers (1948-62). Also documents his work in the 1930s in New York's unemployment compensation system and the U.S. Wages and Hours Division. Other files cover his post-1941 activities with the National Farmers' Union, the Union for Democratic Action, and the War Manpower Commission. The Siftons's papers also contain a number of playscripts for social dramas authored by one or both of them. Present as well is an unfinished exposé of John L. Lewis written by Paul Sifton.

The collection consists of a uniform series of large-scale maps, dating from 1867 to the present and depicting the commercial, industrial, and residential sections of some twelve thousand cities and towns in the United States, Canada, and Mexico and were designed to assist fire insurance agents in determining the degree of hazard associated with a particular property. The Library has the print volumes (accessed via the reading room) as well as these digitized versions and via the database Digital Sanborn Maps, 1867-1970.
The online collection has a checklist is based upon the Library's 1981 publication Fire Insurance Maps in the Library of Congress and will be continually updated to reflect new acquisitions. The online checklist also contains links to existing digital images from our collection and will be updated as new images are added.

It includes records of complaints filed, follow-ups on the complaints, and disposition of cases. Good source of information on discrimination of all types against employees in the defense industry during World War II. Gives information on the names of private companies involved in defense, company addresses, type of industry, number of employees, original documents of complaints, nature of complaints, names of field officers to whom complaints were assigned, resolutions of complaints, statistics on cases, etc. Some typed and mimeographed records are almost illegible. Collection of meeting agenda, summaries of meeting minutes, actions taken at meetings, weekly news digests, and newspaper clippings about the FEPC from 1942-1946. Sound recordings are not included. The collection provides information on the operation of the office of the Chairman of the FEPC. It also includes office memorandums, office files, press releases, field trip reports, agreements between agencies involved in handling disputes, lists of cases pending, teletypes, drafts of proposed Executive Orders, correspondence, Congressional testimony, and other matters of concern to the Committee. Indexes of collections of case records from the FEPC 13 regional offices and the cases referred to the Director of Field Operations. Cases were filed in the regional office of the area in which the offense occurred. Docketable complaints were handled by the fair practice examiner who interviewed the complainant and when a prima facie case existed visited the charged party and referred unsettled cases to the War Manpower Commission for resolution. These indexes are on 3" x 5" or 5" x 8" index cards.

Sites captured in the current web archive include those of government banks and government majority held autonomous banks, Islamic financial institutions particularly in Indonesia and Malaysia where government backing is strong for such establishments, microfinancing agencies within the government that provide specialized services that address marginalized individuals with little access to capital, government banking and financial authorities, stock and security exchange websites, bond market organizations, which are central to interest rates, and selected government agencies that are tasked with economic development such as ministries of economic affairs or government investment boards.

Contains 29 serial titles from 13 states, issued by departments of factory inspection, boards of arbitration, and bureaus of labor statistics during the last quarter of the 19th century. The reports of statistical bureaus of 16 additional states, as well as annual reports of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, are also available in the Microform Reading Room under various film numbers (see guide). The collection contains reports that are important sources of economic, legal, and social data for the years of American's greatest industrial expansion. The data include wages by industry, size of working force, cost of living factors, hours of employment, home ownership and mortgage debt, child, female, and convict labor, factory and mine inspection, state labor laws, and trade union activities. There are also abstracts of foreign labor statistics, copies of answers to various surveys, histories of labor and of the collection of labor statistics, discussions of schools and schooling, and many other subjects related to social conditions and social legislation.

Catalogs spanning 1791 to 1987, with the bulk of them dating between 1880 and 1920. The focus is transportation and covers the categories aircraft, automobiles, carriages and wagons, fire fighting equipment/fire engines/trucks, railroad equipment, and ships & boats. Sub-categories include engines, parts, accessories, equipment, supplies, and various models. Some include drawings of designs, tools, and styles, while others are actual photographs of models, tracing design and development over several years.
The museum's complete holdings are described fully in Trade Catalogs in the Hagley Museum & Library, (HF5681.H234), which divides the 18,000 item collection into 58 subject categories. Six of those categories form this microfiche collection. Automobiles comprise the largest category (470 catalogs), ships & boats the smallest (80 catalogs).

These maps document the development and status of transportation and communication systems on the national, state, and local level. Transportation maps can depict canal and river systems, cycling routes , railway lines and systems, roads and road networks, and traffic patterns. Communication maps illustrate the location and distribution of telegraph routes, telephone systems and radio coverage.

Typed transcripts of 41 interviews with women active in the early and mid-20th century, compiled at the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations at the University of Michigan, with additional material from Wayne State and Roosevelt Universities.
The memoirists include members of service, manufacturing, agricultural, and professional unions; also of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) and the Women's Trade Union League. The 41 women recall organizing drives, elections, soup kitchens, scabs, civil rights struggles, and personal lives.

Chiefly accounting records but also correspondence, letterbooks, circulars, daybooks, digest of laws, reports, indexes, newspapers, printed material, and other records produced by various offices of the Dept. of the Treasury reflecting a portion of the activities of the department. Subjects include military pay and pensions from the American Revolution and War of 1812, the Civil War, customs collection, property assessment in Washington, D.C. (1835), claims for losses to Indian property, claims resulting from hostilities with Spain in Florida, financial accounts of diplomatic agents to the Barbary States, a loan made by U.S. Congress in 1790, a direct tax levied on the states in 1798, the U.S. Commissioner of Insolvency. Of note is record of hire of the brigantine Ranger by the Continental Navy. Correspondents include Chester A. Arthur, Salmon P. Chase, John A. Dix, William Pitt Fessenden, John Mason, Hugh McCulloch, Stephen Pleasonton, and Richard Rush. Records of the U.S. Dept. of the Treasury were assembled by Manuscript Division staff from numerous accessions of Dept. of the Treasury records received by the Library of Congress from the Dept. of the Treasury and other sources over several years. Many of the records in this collection had previously been identified and cataloged by the Division as separate collections, which have since been brought together administratively to form this collection of Dept. of the Treasury records.

The reports vary in length and are arranged alphabetically by subject, covering the whole spectrum of labor issues. Some reports were written by Selig Perlman, a noted labor historian and theorist. Subjects covered include child labor, civil liberties (including the free speech fights in Fresno and San Diego), bargaining agreements, company towns, the cost of living, the homeless, strikes, lockouts, and strikebreaking (including for example strikes by the IWW, the coal strikes in Colorado, the Ludlow Massacre, the Pullman strikes, and the Chicago Waitresses' Strike of 1914), hours of labor, housing, domestic servants, etc. Scattered throughout the reports are "life histories" of workers (lumberjacks, unemployed "floating laborers").
Only a select few of the Commission's reports have ever been published. Remarkably, the reports were ordered by Congress to be destroyed; fortunately the vast majority were nevertheless preserved.

The Library of Congress's collection of telephone directories represents the following states and localities: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and the city of Chicago. The dates of the directories span most of the 20th century. The Library's United States telephone directory collection consists of 8,327 digitized reels of microfilm; of these, about 3,500 are presented in this collection. The remainder of the collection may be requested from the Microform Reader Services (LJ 139).

Oliver Wolcott Jr. was appointed Comptroller of the Treasury in 1791 and later served as Secretary of the Treasury from February 3, 1795 to December 31, 1800. Davenport spent most of his life in the pursuit of commerce, particularly overseas trade. In company with William Whaley and others, he began investing in trading ventures with an interest in the African trade and became a slave trader. The depth and breath of the collection of business papers provides a good picture of the transatlantic slave trade.

Henry Agard Wallace was the 33rd Vice President of the United States (1941-1945), the Secretary of Agriculture (1933-1940), and the Secretary of Commerce (1945-1946). Included in this collection are a number of transcribed telephone and personal interviews with Wallace covering such topics as his work in agriculture and in the New Deal administration under Roosevelt, as well as his years as vice-president. This collection is in 2 microfilm reels.

Annual reports and summary proceedings of the meetings of the Board of Governors of the World Bank (International Bank for Reconstruction and Development) through 1974. Also included are related documents from the Bank's affiliates, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the International Development Association (IDA). These documents provide details on the economic and social condition of countries which have received loans from the World Bank as well as information on Bank sponsored research in agriculture, transportation, and communication systems, and the distribution of natural resources in its role as the source of technical and financial assistance to developing nations. The Westinghouse Works Collection contains 21 actuality films showing various views of Westinghouse companies, which were produced by the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company from April 13 to May 16, 1904, and were photographed by G. W. (Billy) Bitzer. Most prominently featured are the Westinghouse Air Brake Company, the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, and the Westinghouse Machine Company. The films were intended to showcase the company's operations. Exterior and interior shots of the factories are shown along with scenes of male and female workers performing their duties at the plants.

Wyatt, legal counsel for the family and its companies, are legal files relating to the 1937 sit-down strike by Willard employees. This material as well as other Willard Hotel records contain valuable information on labor issues.

Documents collected by Tuckwell: reports and comments on factory bills, documents relating to lead poisoning, industrial law cases, regulations, sweating and related subjects; documents concerning the Women's Trade Union League 1895-1918; documents concerning conferences on women's labor; copies of publications by Tuckwell; and press clippings concerning Tuckwell.

The Women's Labour League was founded in 1906 as a broadly based feminist group with representation from the Labour Party, trade unions, and socialist and cooperative societies. It made investigations, published a newsletter for many decades, and served as a pressure group in such areas as women's work and its regulation and safety; maternal and child care; education; housing; and institutional care for the elderly and disabled. In 1918, the Women's Labour League disappeared as a separate organization and became an integrated part of the Labour Party, as the Labour Party's Women's Organisation. It continued under this name until 1977, when separate proceedings for the Women's Organisation were taken over by the Labour Party.

The Russian-American Company records, once part of the personal library of Gennadiĭ Vasilʹevich Yudin (1840-1912), date from 1783 to 1830. The Russian-American Company was a joint stock company chartered in 1799 by Paul I of Russia, the son and heir of Catherine the Great. The company resulted from a consolidation of several Russian companies founded earlier in the eighteenth century to trade in Alaskan furs. Gregorii Shelikhov (1747-1795), a founder of the Russian-American Company, had been a principal in several of these predecessor companies, including the partnership he founded in 1781 with merchant Ivan Golikov. Shelikhov’s widow, Natalia Alekseeva Shelikhova, took over management of the company after his death and obtained the charter from Paul I.
The Company, based in Irkutsk, Siberia, established a headquarters at New Archangel (today Sitka, Alaska), from which it traded in furs with the local people, established religious missions, and sought to establish Russian colonial settlements on America’s northwest coast. The company also had an interest in trade with the Far East, including Japan.
