This first history of Avon tells the story of a direct sales company that was both a giant in its industry and a kitchen-table entrepreneurial venture from its found in 1886. It is also the story of women and entrepreneurship. This book was drawn from company records the author helped acquire for the Hagley archives and covers the inner workings, uncovers the lives of its representatives, and shows how women slowly rose into the company's middle and upper management.

This is a trade publication at dry goods dealers and by the 1930's it tagged itself as "the Department Store Magazine." Because those stores sold a multitude of items there are articles and advertisements for women's clothing and corsets, women's hair care and beauty supplies, rugs and other housewares, some mends clothing, and many other items. The first Saturday of each month it was fabric and fancy goods and notions. The second Saturday it was all about shoes. The third Saturday it was women’s garments and toilet goods. And the last Saturday it was more home goods like carpets, upholsteries, and lace curtains. Each issue did have an index to advertisers and a Department and News Index which focused on particular products. There have been a few digitized on the Internet Archive. Firms employed marketing and marketing strategies to spread products and brands internationally, despite business, economic, and cultural obstacles to globalization that made the process difficult and complex. The globalization of toiletries proceeded faster than cosmetics, skin care, and hair care.

Throughout the twentieth century, beauty shops have been places where women could enjoy the company of other women, exchange information, and share secrets. The female equivalent of barbershops, they have been institutions vital to community formation and social change. But while the beauty shop created community, it also reflected the racial segregation that has so profoundly shaped American society. Links between style, race, and identity were so intertwined that for much of the beauty shop's history, black and white hairdressing industries were largely separate entities with separate concerns. While African American hair-care workers embraced the chance to be independent from white control, negotiated the meanings of hair straightening, and joined in larger political struggles that challenged Jim Crow, white female hairdressers were embroiled in struggles over self-definition and opposition to their industry's emphasis on male achievement. Yet despite their differences, black and white hairdressers shared common stakes as battles were waged over issues of work, skill, and professionalism unique to women's service work. The lives and rivalry of two of the early pioneers of the cosmetics industry. Helena Rubinstein was born in Poland, Florence Nightingale Graham (later Elizabeth Arden - the name of her first shop) was born in Canada. Business contemporaries, both were self-made millionaires, and women in industry at a time when women had little power in the business world.
