Thematic Collections

The Prints & Photographs Division began to invest deeply in architectural documentation in 1930, when it initiated the Pictorial Archives of Early American Architecture (PAEAA) and acquired photographic negatives of historic buildings from many different contributors. This work expanded with the establishment of the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) in 1933, the Historic American Engineering Record in 1969, and the Historic American Landscapes Survey in 2000.

Additionally the Library has accepted documentary photographic surveys carried out by others, such as the Seagram County Court House Archives, the American Firehouse Survey, and the John Margolies coverage of roadside America. Additional examples of thematic collections include materials compiled by a collector such as the Louis A. Marré; rail transportation collection; postcards of churches, covered bridges, and the Russian Empire; and regional geographic coverage. Small collections related to single buildings and cities are numerous, and are represented only selectively in this guide. The entries in this section are arranged alphabetically by subject matter.

Abstract: This study surveys the built landscape of New York's Central Park as what Tim Ingold calls a "pattern of activities collapsed into an array of features," finding that the carriage drives are a defining feature of the park's original design. The attention to detail and economic investment in the drives embody the cultural sensibilities that governed the park's creation. They provide a theatre for genteel leisure, acculturation, and ostentatious display; direct visitors to important features of the park; and demonstrate the technical virtuosity of civic planners. The drives represented one of the largest physical efforts in the park's construction and were its most widely used feature for several decades after the park opened.

Abstract: Infrastructure has always played a significant role in shaping the city and giving rise to new landscape types. This paper examines the historical relationship between public works and public space and explores the potential for redefining the contemporary park as an extension of urban infrastructure. Recent examples of such hybrid working landscapes are discussed, including the Productive Park design study in New York and Garrison Creek Demonstration Project in Toronto. These issues are investigated further through the student work of two landscape architecture studios at the University of Virginia dealing with waterworks sites: McMillan Sand Filtration Plant in Washington, D.C., and Highbridge Park, New York.

About 400,000 programs have been recorded and nearly 10,000 are available online.

Klosky, J. Ledlie, and Wynn E. Klosky. “Men of Action: French Influence and the Founding of American Civil and Military Engineering.” Construction History, vol. 28, no. 3 (2013): 69–87.
Abstract: It is difficult to overstate the debt owed by the Continental Army to the French military engineers, largely volunteers, who provided essential support during a pivotal period in history. Equally important is the influence of the French scientific approach during the growth of American engineering practice in the early 19th century. Influential engineers and educators such as Duportail, Crozet, and Mahan were educated in French schools, and the methods they learned played an important role in early American engineering and construction practice. The resulting union of the French scientific theory, British methodology, and American need resulted in a unique combination of immigrant and homegrown engineers building the new nation. The authors trace the beginnings of formal engineering practice and military construction in the United States from the coming of the French engineers to the establishment of the Army Corps of Engineers and West Point; the likely source of General Putnam's fortifications at Boston and the relationship between Duportail and Kosciuszko are also mentioned. Early American engineers and professors are discussed, as is the strong connection between French and American engineering education in the early 19th century. The capstone to the early growth of engineering as a discipline in the United States came with the founding of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1852.

Reproduces the record of the County Court House project of Joseph E. Seagram and Sons, Inc., a photographic survey conducted as the corporation's gift to the nation for the Bicentennial. The project produced 11,010 negatives by 24 photographers who worked in all 48 states, with emphasis on the Eastern states, the Midwest, California, and Texas. To the Seagram photographs have been added selected views from earlier collections in the Library of Congress, expanding the geographical coverage of the Seagram Archive, and adding an historical perspective.

Abstract: The image and social role of women were enduring concerns for Frances Benjamin Johnston (1865–1952), as evidenced in her photographic, written, and other production. The twenty-year period I have chosen to study (1890–1910) was one of great flux for the definition of these roles and Johnston's work reflects this transitional era in American culture. Indeed, the flux and uncertainty of the period are mirrored by Johnston's own uncertain relationship to her milieu and the inherent ambiguity in many of her photographs of women, issues that emerge as overarching themes in this text.

I employ the framework of gender to analyze Johnston's efforts to document and construct female roles. Within this framework I utilize biographical, historical, formal, and sociological approaches, in order to offer a more nuanced, if not conflicted, “portrait” of Johnston and her work than is present in previous scholarship.

Chapters 2 and 3 provide biographical and historical background with the aim of illuminating how Johnston's life and professional aspirations informed her representation of women. The following five chapters address specifically Johnston's photographs of women, which I have categorized into four “series”: portraits of society women, photojournalistic essays featuring female workers, pictorialist compositions, and images of “New Women,” which include Johnston's own self-portraits. Finally, Johnston's efforts at shaping roles for women through written essays and an exhibition of the work of American female photographers at the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition are examined. These groups of photographs by Johnston and her other activities have not been previously discussed together.

Johnston both adhered to and subverted conventional depictions of women and their social role. While doing so, she maintained a commitment to the exploration of possibilities for female representation and roles. An examination of her strategies, subject matter, and engagement with her milieu illuminates not only Johnston and her work but also our understanding of the interrelationship between photography and the role of American women at the turn of the twentieth century.

Abstract: From Commerce to Art: American Women Photographers 1850-1900 is the first thorough investigation of nineteenth-century American women's engagement with photography as commercial photographers and as amateur art photographers. Through expanded case studies, the research brings together examples of previously unknown women to illustrate that women were actively engaged with photography from the onset of the medium in America. By examining the popular and professional press, advertisements, diaries and letters, and the photographs themselves, this research also brings to light an extensive body of new primary materials.

The study considers how gender informed women's experience as photographers, artists, and entrepreneurs in relationship to their roles as women, and the complex intersection of these categories. It argues that although the traditional ideal for women did not fit the public arena of photography, women went beyond the domestic sphere, expanding gender roles and ultimately changed the field of photography through their dedication as studio owners, camera operators, writers, lecturers, and competitors. Finally, through their engagement with the relatively new artistic and commercially viable medium, women broke barriers, displayed agency, gained confidence, independence, and a sense of freedom.

Part One, Commerce explores commercial women photographers, typically married women in partnership with their husbands or widows who took over businesses begun by their husbands. Later in the century, the second-generation of commercial women photographers appeared on the urban scene, many of them single women entrepreneurs. Their experiences mirrored the changing demographics of America with its influx of immigrant groups and growth of metropolitan areas.

Part Two, Art looks at the growth of amateur art photography in America and women's camera club affiliations as a manifestation of the rise of consumer culture, women's club movement, increased leisure time, and photography as an artistic pursuit. For these women, the impetus to take up photography grew out of the changing status of the medium By now, photography was evolving into an appropriate leisure-time activity and a fine-art form. The final section traces the experience of other women who ventured farther afield, traveling to the American West to document its sublime scenery and local culture.

Abstract: Noted photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864-1952) embarked on a project to document the restored Chatham Estate and surrounding buildings in Virginia from 1927 through 1929. The success of this project inspired her to continue to capture crumbling high style and vernacular architecture throughout the South with the hopes of aiding in the preservation of these buildings. Funded by the Carnegie Corporation, her efforts lasted until 1944, spanning nine southern states and producing more than 7,000 photographs of an estimated 1,700 architectural structures. By delving into the history of Johnston’s photographic career and contributions, in this thesis I will take a deeper look into Johnston’s Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South and examine how it fit into the cultural context of preservation efforts of the period, and how it affected historical preservation of southern architecture as a whole.

This conversion from steam to diesel motive power began in the mid 1920s and was complete by 1960, with the bulk of the changeover occurring due to rapidly changing business conditions in the decade after World War II. This change occurred for many reasons; economics was not the only motivating factor. The use of diesel motive power in the place of the venerable steam locomotive had far reaching consequences for railroad operations. Dieselization encompassed great technological change as well as social and cultural ramifications.

Diesel locomotives, by virtue of their technology, are more efficient and in many ways ideally suited to railroad operations. They are more versatile and require less persistent maintenance than steam locomotives. Individual railroads initiated dieselization not only to save money and effect higher operating efficiencies, but also to keep abreast of their competitors or because of urban anti-smoke regulations. However, different railroads, faced with different operating and business conditions responded to dieselization in different ways. Initially, most railroads simply substituted diesels into the place of steam locomotives and did not realize the potential of the new motive power to dramatically reshape their operations. The railroad industry as a whole had to integrate the diesels into the existing system instead of building a new system around their different capabilities. In the broader historical context, this is a study of how large organizations deal with the introduction of new technologies and technological systems.

Abstract: Beginning in 1972, photographer John Margolies spent thirty-six years documenting commercial vernacular buildings across the United States. He eventually produced an archive of thirteen thousand photographs, and amassed a collection of related ephemeral material. Taken together, they are a comprehensive record of the American roadside. The current acquisition of the Margolies archive by the Library of Congress is an opportune moment to consider the significance of this collection and to examine, in depth, the contextual and theoretical framework from which Margolies's work emerged. At the turn of the twentieth century, the photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky undertook a quest to document an empire that was undergoing rapid change due to industrialization and the building of railroads. Between 1903 and 1916 Prokudin-Gorsky, who developed a pioneering method of capturing color images on glass plates, scoured the Russian Empire with the patronage of Nicholas II. Intrepidly carrying his cumbersome and awkward camera from the western borderlands over the Volga River to Siberia and central Asia, he created a singular record of Imperial Russia. In 1918 Prokudin-Gorsky escaped an increasingly chaotic, violent Russia and regained nearly 2,000 of his bulky glass negatives. His subsequent peripatetic existence before settling in Paris makes his collection's survival all the more miraculous. The U.S. Library of Congress acquired Prokudin-Gorsky's collection in 1948, and since then it has become a touchstone for understanding pre-revolutionary Russia. Now digitized and publicly available, his images are a sensation in Russia, where people visit websites dedicated to them. William Craft Brumfield--photographer, scholar, and the leading authority on Russian architecture in the West--began working with Prokudin-Gorsky's photographs in 1985. He curated the first public exhibition of them in the United States and has annotated the entire collection. For Antebellum Southerners, proper appearances were a medium of decorum. Consequently, they developed a fixation for appearances. Antebellum planters ordered the natural and man-made environments into efficient devices for agricultural production. And these environments became architectural billboards for announcing financial success. Through this architecture planters created distinctive rural-urban places.

Southern plantation architecture was distinctive, but not homogeneous. Two polarities influenced southern design: the town-plantation relationship and the interaction of sophisticated/self-conscious and vernacular buildings. Furthermore, as a result of local circumstances, transportation routes, and migration/settlement patterns, the South developed architectural sub-regions: tobacco-producing Virginia; rice-producing Georgia and South Carolina; and sugar-producing Louisiana. The most celebrated and diverse of these sub-regions witnessed the development of the "white-columned" architecture of the cotton-belt which has become the accepted image of the southern, antebellum plantation in the popular imagination.

Southerners wished to keep people and elements in their proper places. They preferred well defined patterns of behavior and uses respectively. Consequently, they created an architecture with clearly recognizeable and hierarchical parts. Eventually, there was no scale of plantation planning which was not part of a geometrically ordered pattern of land development making manifest the eventual, irrevocable rigidity of antebellum southern life.

Isolation of the parts of southern life and of southern architecture yielded an insularity of functions and forms. And this insularity had a profound effect on southern architecture and planning. Mental insularity was equally important. Boredom was the principle adversary in daily plantation life. Consequently, social self-sufficiency was more important than physical self-sufficiency.

The Plantation South was eventually dominated by the cotton economy and the Deep-South cotton-planters. A complex and distinctive cluster of forces set this development in motion and created the so-called "white-columned" architecture. Ultimately as important as this architecture itself, were the writers and writings which have examined the phenomenon and which created the southern myth.

Abstract New Orleans's architectural history evidences profound shifts in twentieth-century culture from the advent of modernism in America to the construction of its Piazza d'Italia, completed in 1978 and heralded as a formative moment for postmodern architecture. Although often characterized by its resistance to larger constructs of American and Southern culture and place, New Orleans today possesses both the best remnants of the traditional city and the worst harbingers of the anti-city. Moreover, its built environment is as popularly intriguing as it is architecturally significant. As a result, the city has retained great visibility and cultural authority for more than a century. These factors invite critical consideration.

Within a chronological structure framed by the city's two world's fairs, the 1884 Industrial and Cotton Centennial and the 1984 Louisiana World's Exposition, this dissertation investigates the architectural history of New Orleans, the ways in which it is represented and replicated, and the larger ideological purposes those images serve. First, the dissertation explores the manifestation of modernism in New Orleans's architecture, and the dialectic interaction between regionalism and modernism in the South. After establishing this context, the study reads the contemporary city, exploring the intertextuality of modern and postmodern architecture and society. To understand the intersection of these physical and cultural circumstances, this inquiry views New Orleans through a cross-disciplinary lens, drawing from the literature and methods of cultural studies, Southern history, and contemporary architectural theory in addition to executing historiographic and archival tracking and formal and textual analysis of buildings, literary sources, and mass-mediated representations of the city.

This study argues that New Orleans's centrality in contemporary American culture is a result of the degree to which it offers a microcosmic portrait of the trends that characterize the late-twentieth century city, its changing built forms, social constituencies, and economic structures. It concludes that the shift from the ethics of modernism to those of postmodernism, a culture in which the chief form of cultural production is consumption, has irreparably altered New Orleans's sense of place, which now transcends the temporal and spatial limitations that traditionally wed built form and cultural production to place.

Although independent studios began producing yearly, individual, bust portraits of every student in schools around 1920, contemporary school portrait practices coalesced with the formation of the Professional School Photographers Association International in 1951. This industry organization fostered cooperation between school photographers and established technical standards. The PSPA also provided studios with a collective voice audible to the populations they served and the material suppliers upon which they depended.

Many contemporary artists employ school portraits directly in their work or reference the idiom of school portraiture, which emphasizes the particular identity of each subject and artifact while operating through ritualized repetition. The twenty-year period I have chosen to study (1890–1910) was one of great flux for the definition of these roles and Johnston's work reflects this transitional era in American culture. Indeed, the flux and uncertainty of the period are mirrored by Johnston's own uncertain relationship to her milieu and the inherent ambiguity in many of her photographs of women, issues that emerge as overarching themes in this text.

Within this framework I utilize biographical, historical, formal, and sociological approaches, in order to offer a more nuanced, if not conflicted, “portrait” of Johnston and her work than is present in previous scholarship.

Chapters 2 and 3 provide biographical and historical background with the aim of illuminating how Johnston's life and professional aspirations informed her representation of women. The following five chapters address specifically Johnston's photographs of women, which I have categorized into four “series”: portraits of society women, photojournalistic essays featuring female workers, pictorialist compositions, and images of “New Women,” which include Johnston's own self-portraits. Finally, Johnston's efforts at shaping roles for women through written essays and an exhibition of the work of American female photographers at the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition are examined. These groups of photographs by Johnston and her other activities have not been previously discussed together.

Johnston both adhered to and subverted conventional depictions of women and their social role. While doing so, she maintained a commitment to the exploration of possibilities for female representation and roles. An examination of her strategies, subject matter, and engagement with her milieu illuminates not only Johnston and her work but also our understanding of the interrelationship between photography and the role of American women at the turn of the twentieth century.

The study considers how gender informed women's experience as photographers, artists, and entrepreneurs in relationship to their roles as women, and the complex intersection of these categories. It argues that although the traditional ideal for women did not fit the public arena of photography, women went beyond the domestic sphere, expanding gender roles and ultimately changed the field of photography through their dedication as studio owners, camera operators, writers, lecturers, and competitors. Finally, through their engagement with the relatively new artistic and commercially viable medium, women broke barriers, displayed agency, gained confidence, independence, and a sense of freedom.

Part One, Commerce explores commercial women photographers, typically married women in partnership with their husbands or widows who took over businesses begun by their husbands. Later in the century, the second-generation of commercial women photographers appeared on the urban scene, many of them single women entrepreneurs. Their experiences mirrored the changing demographics of America with its influx of immigrant groups and growth of metropolitan areas.

Part Two, Art looks at the growth of amateur art photography in America and women's camera club affiliations as a manifestation of the rise of consumer culture, women's club movement, increased leisure time, and photography as an artistic pursuit. For these women, the impetus to take up photography grew out of the changing status of the medium By now, photography was evolving into an appropriate leisure-time activity and a fine-art form. The final section traces the experience of other women who ventured farther afield, traveling to the American West to document its sublime scenery and local culture.

Examining illustrated periodicals, ornate gift-books, literary anthologies, race encyclopedias and "who's who" volumes, posters and prints showcasing literary icons, and unpublished scrapbooks, I piece together a history of the first concerted effort by African American writers to mediate race—to "frame blackness"—for a broad audience. Their literary productions engage the photograph's evolving capacity to render human subjects "samples" and "types" of particular categories: the criminal, the prostitute, the colonial subject, the fashionable woman, the normative American family. Harnessing (and sometimes interrogating) the photograph's capacity to "sample," turn-of-the-century African American writers experimented with textual format and literary form in pursuit of new, modern racial representations. This dissertation recuperates these multimedia experiments, contextualizing them as early modernist works whose formal and thematic innovations and interventions would shape African American literary history for decades.

The lives and works of four writers—Paul Laurence Dunbar, Pauline Hopkins, Booker T. Washington, and James Weldon Johnson—structure this inquiry. Each chapter takes up a different author. My method, a combination of archival work, biography, and close reading, allows me to recover works often left out of conventional literary histories, like Dunbar's collaborations with the Hampton Camera Club, the short-lived Woman's Era magazine which propelled the national consolidation of the African American women's club movement in the mid-1890s, and Booker T. Washington's Working with the Hands—billed as the "sequel" to Up from Slavery and illustrated with photographs by Frances Benjamin Johnston. This approach reveals the historical contingency of the production of the African American tradition and recovers multiple erasures of founding efforts to delineate its origins. Organized chronologically with some overlap, the chapters tell a story of multiple, contested visions for modern black subjecthood and modern black literary production which presage (and more thoroughly contextualize) the better-known developments of the Harlem Renaissance.

Abstract: Noted photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864-1952) embarked on a project to document the restored Chatham Estate and surrounding buildings in Virginia from 1927 through 1929. The success of this project inspired her to continue to capture crumbling high style and vernacular architecture throughout the South with the hopes of aiding in the preservation of these buildings. Funded by the Carnegie Corporation, her efforts lasted until 1944, spanning nine southern states and producing more than 7,000 photographs of an estimated 1,700 architectural structures. By delving into the history of Johnston’s photographic career and contributions, in this thesis I will take a deeper look into Johnston’s Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South and examine how it fit into the cultural context of preservation efforts of the period, and how it affected historical preservation of southern architecture as a whole.

Abstract: The problem of commemoration is an important aspect of the sociology of culture because it bears on the way society conceives its past. Current approaches to this problem draw on Émile Durkheim and emphasize the way commemorative objects celebrate society's former glories. This article on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial deals with the way society assimilates past events that are less than glorious and whose memory induces controversy instead of consensus. The Vietnam War differed from other wars because it was politically controversial and morally questionable and resulted in defeat; it resembled other wars because it called out in participants the traditional virtues of courage, self-sacrifice, and honor. The task of representing these contrasting aspects of the war in a single monument was framed by the tension between contrasting memorial genres. Focusing on the discursive field out of which the Vietnam Veterans Memorial emerged, this analysis shows how opposing social constituencies articulated the ambivalence attending memories of the Vietnam War. Ambivalence was expressed not only in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial's design but also in the design of Vietnam War monuments later erected throughout the United States. These efforts to memorialize a divisive war, along with attempts in other nations to come to terms with the difficulties of their past, call into question Durkheim's belief that moral unity is the ultimate object of commemoration. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial and devices like it come into view not as symbols of solidarity but as structures that render more explicit, and more comprehensible, a nation's conflicting conceptions of itself and its past.

Abstract: Few published essays have explored the way in which the Vietnam Veterans Memorial actually communicates with visitors. This article explores the memorial as a "linking object," as conceived by psychoanalyst Vamik Volkan, and as a "space of absence," as defined by Richard Etlin, and shows how these two ways of understanding the memorial are interconnected. A particularly innovative aspect of the memorial is the way it engenders awareness of both surface (emphasized by the inscribed names) and space (experienced as "virtual space") resulting from the reflectivity of the granite, which gives it an apparent ("virtual") depth. The reflective surface brings one "into" the "space" of the wall and allows simultaneous perception of the names of the dead, the reflections of other visitors, and the reflection of oneself. The complex interactive process wherein the inexactness and ambiguity of the reflections catch the viewer, engender projective fantasy, and (because of the presence of the names) simultaneously structure it, fosters a proximity to and an identification with the dead, and the simultaneous experience of connection and separation.

During the 1960s and 1970s, commemorative public art was generally reviled. Attempts to commission monuments often failed, and the majority of the few dedicated were either based on nineteenth-century academic styles, or were unsuccessful attempts to blend Modernist abstraction with narrative commemorative programs. Halting attempts at innovation did occur, however, particularly in the steps taken towards the new participatory memorial type.

This type was fully realized in Maya Lin's Vietnam Veterans Memorial (1982), which allowed visitors to construct commemorative content through spatio-temporal experience, rather than passively receiving didactic content from an iconic object. Lin's Wall was initially controversial, but ultimately became the most influential monument in America, affecting the style, iconography, and positive reception of memorials in the 1980s and 1990s. Frederick Hart's Three Fightingmen (1984), an academic figurative group added to the site to placate conservative critics, influenced a resurgence of narrative statuary across the country.

During the 1980s and 1990s, commemorative public art proliferated. The NVVM sparked the creation of state and local Vietnam memorials, which in turn stimulated public desire for memorials to veterans of other wars, and many other subjects. Subject matter expanded to include women, minority groups, and victims of disasters. In 1993, Glenna Goodacre's figurative Vietnam Women's Memorial was dedicated on the NVVM site. Memorial types also expanded as contemporary artists embraced participation and developed innovative strategies for commemoration.

The aesthetic and political issues surrounding Lin's Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Hart's Three Fightingmen have resuscitated, framed, and expanded the critical and public discourse surrounding subsequent memorials in America. Conventional figuration and accelerating participatory innovation are practiced simultaneously, and often uneasily coexist in single monuments.

Near the end of the process to select a winning design for the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial competition, a vocal group of survivors and stakeholders began to demand that their voices be heard and their input be included in the decision-making, if not in the design, of such memorials. There were a number of reasons for this change of attitude and approach, which were uncovered through additional data gathering. In each memorial design since that time, the survivors and surviving stakeholders have asked to be heard and included in the decision-making to an increasingly greater degree. This document traces many of the factors dealing with the design of recent monuments and memorials and indicates the ways in which design and decision-making have changed in the past two decades. It highlights the intricate ways in which contemporaries navigated the complex relationship between memory, history and identity, as they attempted to define a vision of the past that suited their present needs. And it considers the interplay between private and public forms of remembrance with the goal of understanding the nature and direction of commemoration at the close of the century in the United States. Finally, it challenges, recent historiographical arguments that the Vietnam Veterans Memorial represented a breakdown in traditional modes of commemoration and that the controversy reflected larger cultural and political conflicts. Instead, it shows that while the Wall, the Three Servicemen and the Vietnam Women's Memorial engaged the country in a very personal and reflective process, national narratives continued to have a profound impact on the creation of meaning and remained important conceptual tools that shaped the collective function of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

The Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), the National Capitol Monuments Commission (NCMC), and the National Park Service (NPS) all must approve memorials built on the National Mall. In some cases, the memorials shared project architects and sponsoring agencies. The case studies show that the design competition process ultimately shapes the meaning and appearance of the built memorials.

I argue that the guidelines, winning design, sponsoring agency, jury, and approval processes are all mitigating factors in the appearance and meaning of contemporary memorials designed through a competition process, and that the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (1982), the Korean War Veterans Memorial (1995), and the National World War II Memorial (2004) present three models of transformation prompted by the design competition and implementation process. Each case study analyzes the way in which sponsoring agencies reshaped the designs throughout the process, with the consequence that content was driven by the intervening agencies as opposed to the winning designers.

At the age of thirty-six, in 1852, Lt. Montgomery Cunningham Meigs of the Army Corps of Engineers reported to Washington, D.C., for duty as a special assistant to the chief army engineer, Gen. Joseph G. Totten. It was a fateful assignment, both for the nation's capital and for the bright, ambitious, and politically connected West Point graduate. Meigs's forty-year tenure in the nation's capital was by any account spectacularly successful. He surveyed, designed, and built the Washington water supply system, oversaw the extension of the U.S. Capitol and the erection of its massive iron dome, and designed and supervised construction of the Pension Building, now the home of the National Building Museum. The skills he exhibited in supervising engineering projects were carefully noted by political leaders, including president-elect Abraham Lincoln, who named Meigs quartermaster general of the Union Army, the most important position he held during his long and active military career. Meigs believed Washington, D.C., should be the reincarnation of Rome, the ancient capital of the Roman Empire. He endeavored to memorialize the story of the American nation in all the structures he built, expressing these ideas in murals, sculpture, and monumental design. Historians have long known Meigs for the organizational genius with which he fulfilled his duty as quartermaster general during the Civil War and for his unwavering loyalty to Lincoln and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. This volume establishes his claim as one of the major nineteenth-century contributors to the built environment of the nation's capital.

Abstract: The alliance of architecture, engineering, and industry in mid- nineteenth-century America is revealed by studying Thomas U. Walter's use of iron in the United States Capitol extensions. Structural and decorative applications of iron were incorporated into the designs for the Capitol's wings from 1851 to 1868. Within the Capitol, Walter rebuilt the Library of Congress, which, upon its completion in 1853, was the country's first iron room. In the all-iron dome, built from 1855 to 1866, the ferrous material is subtly apparent in the dome's attenuated form, indicating the space frame structure behind the dome's classically-inspired outer shell.

The research method focuses on the technological process of building and on the context of the iron industry in order to elucidate how these great feats of architecture came to be and how they represent the country's technical prowess. The technological process has been revealed by re-assembling, through project documentation, the chronology of the introduction of iron in Walter's works and by studying that chronology in light of biographical facts about those who contributed to the work and evidence of their jurisdictions.

This study finds that Walter, heretofore mostly remembered for works in the classical idiom, also possessed the mechanical and scientific knowledge necessary to exploit the potential of iron in his architecture. He was at the nucleus of the network of individuals who carried out their roles at the Capitol, in effect, as Walter's extended persona. Montgomery C. Meigs, a military engineer and the supervisor of the works, is found to have made important contributions through his passion for state-of-the-art materials and fame and through the talents of his assistant engineers, Ottmar Sonnemann and Charles Thomas. Critical technical know-how was provided by the principal ironworks, Janes, Beebe & Company, and its employees, Michael Raleigh and John Cuddy, in particular. This paper re-establishes the history of this previously little-known company, which began as furnace and stove manufacturers, and documents the importance of its relationship with Walter through the firm's Charles Fowler.
