Advanced Search Overview

Advanced Search Indexes

Users can currently search across the following indexes in Advanced Search:

  • Keyword
  • Title: all
  • Title: main
  • Author/creator
  • Subject: all
  • Subject: geographic
  • Name: all
  • Name: personal
  • Identifiers (ISBN, ISSN, LCCN, etc)
  • Series
  • Place of publication

Search Operators

For each field, users may select one of four search operators:

  • Contains all: The search query should return instances that contain the entered search term/s, regardless of order.

  • Contains any: The search query should return instances that contain any of the entered search term/s.

  • Exact phrase: The search query should return instances that exactly match the search term/s entered.

  • Starts with: The search query should return instances that match the left-anchored search term/s.

Search Limiters

The Advanced Search option allows for structuring more complex searches using search terms, pre-filtering, or a combination thereof. If a user wishes to use filters alone, they may enact these at the bottom of the page.

Each drop down menu that appears- Format, Language and Location - allows for multiple selections, while Publication Year forces a single selection by way of a radio button.

After initiating the search, the search limiters in place will appear at the top of the search results page and may be cleared or adjusted as needed.

Boolean Search

The Advanced Search interface affords users the opportunity to build a cross-index Boolean search.

By default, Advanced Search offers search on up to three fields, but you may use the Add Fields option to expand the search parameters as needed. You can also use Boolean operators to combine the search box entries with AND, OR, or NOT.

After initiating the search, the search string will be built using the Advanced option in the Search dropdown, which is designed to support search using the contextual query language or CQL syntax.
