Important Information for Researchers

Notice to researchers:  Users with accounts created before June 30th must reset their password (see below).

This change is part of the larger Library Collections Access Platform (LCAP) project, which replaces legacy systems toward the goal of enabling users to seamlessly discover and access all of the Library’s collections materials. 

Users with accounts created before June 30th, 2025 must reset their password

Accounts created before June 30, 2025

Active accounts were migrated from the former Catalog. If your account was created or Reader card issued before June 30, 2025, please follow these steps to activate your account in the new Catalog.

  1. Find your account barcode. This is printed on your Reader card, and is the same barcode you used to login to the former Catalog.

  2. Go to search.catalog.loc.gov/forgot-password.
  3. Enter your account barcode, NOT your email address.
  4. You will receive an email with a link -- click that link.
  5. Create a password.
  6. Your account is now active, and you can login!

Troubleshooting account issues

Forgotten password

If you cannot remember your account password, go to search.catalog.loc.gov/forgot-password and follow these steps to create a new one.

  1. Enter the username you use to login to your account.
  2. You will receive an email with a link -- click that link.
  3. Create a new password.
  4. You can now login to your account with your new password.

Error when trying to reset password

If you see this error message when attempting to reset your password at search.catalog.loc.gov/forgot-password, please contact a staff member in person or at ask.loc.gov for assistance.

Forgotten username

If you cannot remember your username, go to search.catalog.loc.gov/forgot-username and follow these steps to retrieve it. 

  1. Enter the email address associated with your account. 
  2. You will receive an email with your username.
  3. Go to search.catalog.loc.gov/login, and use your username to login.

Error when trying to retrieve username

If you see this error message when attempting to retrieve your username at search.catalog.loc.gov/forgot-username, please contact a staff member in person or at ask.loc.gov and we can retrieve your username for you.

Errors when submitting a request

Some items in the Library of Congress Catalog are only requestable by select patrons. If you see this error message when requesting an item, please contact a staff member in person or at ask.loc.gov for assistance.
