1977-1997 Economic Census

The 1977 Economic Censuses covered manufacturing, mining and quarrying, construction industries, retail trade, wholesale trade, service industries, and selected transportation activities. The 1982 Economic Censuses covered retail and wholesale trades, and service, construction, manufactures, and mineral industries, They also included special programs or surveys of transportation, enterprise statistics, women- and minority-owned business enterprises, and characteristics of business owners.  In 1976 title 13, U.S. Code was changed with the passage of Public Law 94-229 to authorize the Census Bureau to conduct the agriculture and economic censuses for the same reference year beginning with the year 1982.

The 1987 Economic Censuses covered retail and wholesale trades; manufactures; transportation; and service, construction, and mineral industries. It also included special programs and surveys of enterprise statistics, women- and minority-owned business enterprises, and characteristics of business owners. The census of agriculture was taken again in conjunction with the economic censuses by the Census Bureau.

The 1992 Economic Censuses covered retail and wholesale trades; service industries; construction industries; transportation; communications, and utilities; financial, insurance, and real estate; manufactures; and mineral industries. It included special programs and surveys of enterprise statistics, women- and minority-owned business enterprises, and characteristics of business owners. The census of agriculture was taken again in conjunction with the economic censuses by the Census Bureau as it was done for 1987 and 1982.

The 1997 Economic Census covered almost all economic activity in the U.S. with the exception of agriculture and a few other activities. Major business activity in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands of the United States, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands was covered. It included special programs such as the Survey of Minority-Owned Businesses, Survey of Women-Owned Businesses, Business Expenditures Survey, Vehicle Inventory and Use Survey, and Commodity Flow Survey.

The 1997 Economic Census results were released mostly electronically: on the Internet and CD-ROMs. Only national summary reports were published in print.
