The Music Division holds millions of published scores ranging from first editions to modern editions and published facsimiles. Researchers can search and browse the Library of Congress Online Catalog to find bibliographic information about printed scores in the collections.

TIP: To limit your search results to scores and/or literature in the Music Division's collections, be sure to "Add Limits" beneath your search terms in the Advanced Search mode. Under "Location in the Library," select "Performing Arts" from the drop-down menu. This action will limit your search results to material in the custody of the Music Division.

Also note that the Library of Congress Online Catalog does not reflect complete holdings for the Music Division. There are a handful of scores cataloged in our on-site card catalog, and even individual works that are not found in any of our catalogs; these scores, however, are organized in our stacks according to genre. Contact a reference librarian via Ask A Librarian to ask about a specific score you cannot locate, or to learn about what scores may not be represented in our online catalog or digitized holdings.

For a complete listing of Clara Schumann's publications, including original compositions, arrangements, and critical editions, see her Catalogue of Works in Nancy Reich's Clara Schumann: The Artist and the Woman.

Clara Schumann as Editor

The Collected Works of Robert Schumann

After Robert's death in 1856, Clara assumed responsibility for editing his collected works. She signed a contract to publish a critical edition of Schumann's complete works with Breitkopf & Härtel and drew heavily upon Brahms's expertise and familiarity with Schumann's music in the process. She particularly relied on Brahms to edit the orchestral, choral, and ensemble works, and asked him to take over the supplementary volume (on which his name appears). At Brahms's suggestion, Clara sought input from other friends and admirers of Robert's music including Joseph Joachim, Hermann Levi, Heinrich von Herzogenberg, Philipp Spitta, and others. Despite the collaborative nature of the work, only Clara Schumann's name is listed on the published edition, an intentional decision meant to signal authenticity and authority. Robert Schumann's Werke consists of 35 volumes, organized into the following 14 series:

Ser. 1: Symphonien
Ser. 2: Ouverturen
Ser. 3: Concerte u. Concertstücke
Ser. 4: Für Streichinstrumente
Ser. 5: Für Pianoforte und andere Instrumente
Ser. 6: Für 1 oder 2 Pianoforte, zu 4 Händen
Ser. 7: Für Pianoforte zu 2 Händen
Ser. 8: Fugen über den Namen Bach für Orgel
Ser. 9: Grössere Gesangwerke mit Orchester oder mehreren Instrumenten
Ser. 10: Mehrstimmige Gesangwerke mit Pianoforte
Ser. 11: Für Männerchor
Ser. 12: Für Sopran, Alt, Tenor, u. Bass
Ser. 13: Für eine Singstimme, mit Begleitung des Pianoforte
Ser. 14: Supplement
