The effects of the contest between the political systems of the United States and the Soviet Union were felt around the globe. The holdings of the Manuscript Division primarily originate in the US, but also include collections acquired from abroad. These document the impact of the Cold War in locations as diverse as Guatemala, Laos, Lithuania, and Yugoslavia. In addition, the division holds records of the Russian investigation into the August 1991 coup attempt against President and General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, and Dmitriĭ Antonovich Volkogonov's collection of papers on the history of Russia and the Soviet Union. Other collections of international origin, such as the papers of Russian author Boris Brasol, Czech diplomat Jan Papanek, and Soviet intelligence officer Alexander Vassiliev, are listed in the appropriate categories in this guide.
