Moral Re-armament (MRA) was founded in London, England, in 1938 as a worldwide movement for spiritual and moral reawakening. Leader Frank Buchman brought the MRA to the United States a year later. The records include correspondence, play and film scripts, radio and television broadcasting files, subject files, press releases, clippings, printed material, and scrapbooks documenting the policies, organization, programs, activities, and membership of the group. The files reflect the role of the group’s officers in shaping the organizational, theological, and philosophical development of MRA, especially in regard to pacifism, isolationism, and anticommunism. Among the primary features of the group’s records are files treating its post-World War II attempt to imbue the noncommunist world with an ideological counterpart to Soviet and Chinese communism. Centered initially in Europe and Japan, this effort was expanded during the Cold War era to newly emerging nations in Africa and the developing countries of Asia and South America.

Morgenthau (1904-1980) was a political scientist, educator, and author. His papers include correspondence, lectures, writings, academic files, subject files, printed matter, and other papers primarily relating to Morgenthau's career as an analyst of international relations from the World War II era until his death in 1980. Documented is his work at the University of Chicago (1943-1971) and the New School for Social Research (1974-1980). The papers include drafts and galley proofs of his books, including Politics Among Nations (1948), and of his articles for several publications. His association with academic and activist organizations is also documented. Subjects include US-Soviet détente, and the Vietnam War.

Niebuhr (1892-1971) was a theologian, philosopher, and author. The collection contains correspondence, speeches, sermons, lectures, typescripts of books and articles, book reviews, bibliographies, subject files, biographical material, family papers, photographs, and memorabilia relating chiefly to Niebuhr's influence on twentieth-century theology, politics, and society; and to his efforts to apply religious and ethical standards to modern social and political problems. The files reflect his interest in various social and religious organizations, and his involvement with political groups such as Americans for Democratic Action, the Commission on Freedom of the Press, and the Union for Democratic Action. There are numerous outlines of sermons delivered by Niebuhr and typescripts of articles ranging in subject matter from national and international political affairs to labor and race relations, theology, and economics.
