Published as a companion to the Beekman Family papers held by the New York Historical society library, this title looks at 6 generations of the prominent New York mercantile family, the Beekmans, from William Beekman's arrival with Peter Stuyvesant in 1647 to the career of James William Beekman, a prominent New York politician in the 19th century. Of particular interest to the historical researcher focusing on business is the list of 18th century trade terms included in the work.

This title focuses on the Dutch dimension of the integrated Atlantic World and how Dutch networks functioned in the Atlantic and highlights the role of the Dutch in the Atlantic. The chapters present the economic function of the Dutch as middlemen and brokers who helped the Atlantic system operate by embedding themselves in the networks of other empires.

For nearly two centuries the Dutch Republic played a large role in world trade, shipping, and finance. This is a general account from its origins in the sixteenth century to the final collapse in the eighteenth century.

This book looks beyond just Colonial America, telling the story of how the Dutch built and eventually lost an Atlantic empire that stretched from the homeland in the United Provinces to the Hudson River and from Brazil and the Caribbean to the African Gold Coast. Some attention is paid to how Dutch colonization compared with English and French colonization.

This was originally published as a Writers Project in 1941 to provide a concise account of the Port of New York 400 year history. This is an expanded reprint with some additional content. It is presented in chronological fashion with chapters 1-5 covering the period prior to 1805. However, the original 1941 edition and a 1973 reprint are also available.

This is presented roughly in chronological order with each successive time period given a theme. Part one covers the period until 1700 and starts with the period when the port was established and moves on to early growth and the creation of a regional economy. Part two covers the period between 1700 until the years of war including the French and Indian War and just prior to the Revolution. There is an extensive notes section as well as two Appendixes. Appendix A is a series of tables and graphs covering trade figures, vessel movement, revenues, currency, and products sold (wheat, flour). Appendix B consists of a few bills of exchange.

The history of the West India Company figures heavily in this title which looks to provide insight and answers as to what the Dutch were trying to accomplish in New Netherland. The bibliography is helpful in identifying primary, secondary, and a host of other sources.

An interesting article that looks at the city's growth before the Civil War.
