About the Collections
The Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division holds television commercials throughout its collections. Presented here are collections dedicated to television advertising and several other collections in which commercials can be found. The Karr, Gitt, and Dartmouth Collections of Television Commercials are cataloged in the Library's Online Catalog at the collection level and are linked to their catalog records. See Using the Collections to view finding aids and learn about searching the collections.
This collection contains 1,928 commercials produced during the 1960s and early 1970s, as well as 75 public service announcements. The products advertised include items such as food for human and pet consumption, automobiles, cigarettes, miscellaneous products for indoor and outdoor household use, entertainment products, and various services. Companies represented in the Karr Collection include Colgate-Palmolive, Campbell's, Chevrolet, General Foods, American Oil Company, Topper Toys, and many more. These commercials were broadcast on WJAR-TV, Channel 10, the NBC affiliate in the Providence, Rhode Island area. Although some of the advertising campaigns found in this collection were for products available only in this geographic area, most were for products meant for a wider, national audience of viewers and consumers. Researchers in the fields of broadcasting history, advertising history, industrial relations, film and media studies, American studies, women's studies, African American studies, and other areas will find these films rich in representations of American life during the 1960s and early 1970s. Many of the ads depict, or make reference to, topics and issues which characterize that time period. The environmental concerns as reflected by the Great Society programs of the Johnson administration, the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights movement, the burgeoning "youth culture", the women's movement and the sexual revolution are presented in imaginative ways in these commercials. Aesthetically, the visual and aural zeitgeist of the 1960s and early 1970s is captured through use of jump cuts, montage editing, innovative lighting, "mod" fashions, psychedelic graphics, and diverse music sound tracks representing rock and roll and jazz that foreshadow the techniques later found in the music videos of the MTV era.
This collection consists of 362 different commercials made during the early 1970's. The collection also contains 7 public service announcements from the American Dairy Association.
The commercials in the Gitt Collection offer a comprehensive look at the consumer society in the U.S. during the early 1970's. A wide variety of goods including personal and cosmetic products, automobiles, foods, and medications are advertised. Almost a quarter of the commercials in the collection advertise toys, games or dolls, thus showing the large market for children's items. These commercials also offer the opportunity to see well-known faces in, as some in the collection feature famous spokespersons.
This collection of television commercials consists of approximately 500 commercials made by Robert Lawrence Productions between 1952 and 1963. The commercials in the collection were for US and Canadian distribution.
Robert Lawrence established Robert Lawrence Productions in 1952 and Grantray-Lawrence Productions in 1954. A Canadian office for Robert Lawrence Productions opened in 1955. An alumni of Dartmouth College, Lawrence donated a collection of commercials to that college. Dartmouth then gave a portion of the collection to the Library of Congress in 1966, giving our collection its name.
The commercials were all broadcast, except for some entries which appear to be test footage. A wide variety of items is shown in these commercials which were solicited by an equally diverse range of companies. Many of the commercials are in French and Spanish, reflecting the diverse markets that were reached by these commercials.
The Prelinger Archive
The Prelinger Archive is an extensive collection of advertising, educational, industrial, documentary, and amateur films. The collection contains television commercials as well as public service announcements and political campaign spots. The Library acquired the collection in 2002.
The Library is still processing this massive collection, but nearly 7,000 films in the Prelinger Archive can be viewed online at the Internet Archive External.
Coca-Cola Advertising Collection
This collection is an archive of material given to The Library of Congress by The Coca-Cola Company beginning in 2000. It is a collection spanning the globe and history: the earliest item dates from 1928 and forty countries are represented. Coca-Cola has used television to advertise its products in nearly two hundred countries since the 1950s. The collection provides a comprehensive look at the development of the company's television advertising both in the United States and around the world. Currently the collection's holdings exceed 40,000 items, from individual commercials to film and sound elements used in creating each commercial. Topics portrayed in the commercials deal with popular culture. Notable figures and reactions to current events appear in the collection. People and groups like Paula Abdul, Jennifer Aniston, Charles Barkley, Pierce Brosnan, Kobe Bryant, Ray Charles, Bing Crosby, Celine Dion, Earth Wind and Fire, Thomas Edison, Wayne Gretzky, Bob Hope, Whitney Houston, Elton John, Cyndi Lauper, David Letterman, Jennifer Lopez, Demi Moore, Paul Newman, Prince, The Pointer Sisters, Daniel Radcliffe, Kenny Rogers, The Rolling Stones, Diana Ross, Will Smith, and Vanna White appear to appeal to the public. The most notable events depicted deal with sports: The Olympics, World Cup and Super Bowl. Other organizations like American Idol, Busch Gardens, Disney, Harry Potter, MTV, Nascar, NBA, NFL, NHL, Six Flags, Special Olympics and Walmart are featured in the advertising.
