Concerts from the Library of Congress: Pick of the Week

Each week, the Library of Congress Music Division features free video performances, lectures, and conversations to keep you company.

Introduction

This edition of the Pick of the Week brings you a concert and panel discussion on African-American spirituals of the Civil War. The program highlights the importance of the spiritual traditions of the 19th century and their influence on all American music. This concert was part of the Songs of America initiative, which celebrates the history of creativity in America through song.

We hope this edition of the Pick of the Week inspires you to learn more about African-American spirituals, the African American Song, and the contributions of Black Americans to the music and culture of this great nation.
