This Pick of the Weekend brings you the Vienna Piano Trio performing the music of Haydn, Schoenberg and Brahms. The Library of Congress holds the manuscripts for the Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht and the Steuermann transcription of that work, as well as the Brahms Trio (see link below). We have paired this concert with a lecture by musicologist Wayne Shirley on Verklärte Nacht. We hope you enjoy it!
The renowned Vienna Piano Trio returns to the Library of Congress to play a program of works by three generations of composers known for their relationship to Vienna: Haydn, of the “First Viennese School;” Brahms as a prominent resident of Vienna; and Schoenberg as the patriarch of the “Second Viennese School.”
Wayne Shirley discusses the manuscript sources for Arnold Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht in the Library's Whittall Collection.
