Balkan Insight contains current information from nine countries in the Balkans [Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia], and will keep its readers updated on the latest developments in the region, through regular analytical and investigative reports. It covers reforms and the transition process, business and investment trends, while a daily news service is available through the In brief section. Cambridge Archive Editions Online presents a wealth of historical reference materials which otherwise would remain unknown, difficult to access, or fragmentary. Considered collectively, this body of documents represents many thousands of original documents of the National Archives (UK) represented in facsimile, including numerous maps, on the national heritage and political development of many countries. For many years CAE has specialized in the history of many countries, including Slavic countries and the Balkans. The value and discoverability of this content is enhanced immeasurably through CAEs document-level citations and rich indexing. Collections currently available are:
European, Slavic & Caucasian Collection includes 11 titles consisting of 39 volumes. These are unique historical reference materials on political, territorial, and ethnic issues from the 18th - 20th centuries. Some titles include diplomatic correspondence from the Balkan region, providing researchers with invaluable research material on ethnic boundary issues. Articles are in English and in two dozen other European languages. Cold War Eastern Europe provides access to thousands of files from the political departments of the U.K. Foreign Office responsible for dealing with and reporting on the Soviet Union and the socialist states of Eastern Europe during the Cold War. Sourced entirely from The National Archives, U.K., the files provide a uniquely comprehensive, English-language history of post-Stalinist Eastern Europe. With coverage of every country in Eastern Europe, the resource enables comparative study of trends across the region, or in-depth analysis of individual countries.

Ebart Newspaper Archive (Novinski arhiv) represents a database of articles from printed media in Serbia. Although the language and sources of the content are Serbian, topics related to Croatia appear frequently in the database. The Archive contains 27 daily and weekly newspapers published throughout Serbia, and special newspaper supplements. It contains all relevant articles from printed media since the beginning of 2003 to the present. The Archive presently contains more than 2,000,000 full indexed articles that can also be searched in full-text. Articles are updated with a 48-hour delay due to news publisher's copyrights. The Archive is divided into thematic units, modeled after common newspaper sections:

Although a very small number of copies may have found their way into the Government Documents collections of some libraries, no institution outside of the Central Intelligence Agency holds all of the records. These previously unavailable transcripts provide views on Middle East crises and negotiations, the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, the secret acquisition of radar systems by the People's Republic of China, and much more.

The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina came about as a result of the breakup of Yugoslavia. In Yugoslavia the national Communist party, officially called Alliance or League of Communists of Yugoslavia, was losing its ideological potency, while nationalist and separatist ideologies were on the rise in the late 1980s. Crisis erupted with the weakening of the Communist system at the end of the Cold War. This was particularly noticeable in Serbia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and to a lesser extent in Slovenia and Republic of Macedonia. Throughout 1991 international and national political maneuvering failed to prevent Bosnia from slipping into civil war.

The Slavic Humanities Index is a new bibliographic database in the field of Central, Eastern, and South-eastern European Studies. This is a cover-to-cover indexing tool encompassing important scholarly and cultural periodicals in the humanities of the region. This interdisciplinary index includes bibliographic citations of articles in history, philosophy, literature, linguistics, ethnology, theatre and film studies, as well as cultural, borderland, and regional studies. Thus, the database allows cross-cultural and cross-discipline searches. The periodicals indexed in the database are published in Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine.
