Subscription Databases

These databases are some of the more specialized databases that would be helpful for research in this area. This list does not include any of the more general full-text databases that are widely available but also good for research on this topic so look for those locally.

With the exception of the Handbook of Latin American Studies, these are databases that are accessible to researchers on-site at the Library of Congress but they may also be available through local or university libraries.

The subscription resources marked with a padlock are available to researchers on-site at the Library of Congress. If you are unable to visit the Library, you may be able to access these resources through your local public or academic library.

Factiva is a vast full text archive of publications and up-to-the-minute reports and news focusing on global developments and business. Combines over 35,000 sources from the Dow Jones Interactive and Reuters Business Briefing to provide premium business content from 200 countries and in 26 languages. Factiva is very strong in trade journals and company reports.

Handbook of Latin American Studies (HALS)

The HALS database includes citations for books, journal articles, conference papers, maps, and websites and contains bibliographic records from volumes 47-71 of the Handbook of Latin American Studies. This title in print goes back to 1936 so would be a useful resource for those looking at the relationship of the two countries over time.

This databases includes full-text, keyword-searchable academic journals dating back to the late 17th century. Sample titles include: Foreign Affairs, International Legal Materials, Military Affairs, American Journal of International Law, Latin American Perspectives, Caribbean Studies, Cuban Studies, Hispanic American Historical Review, World Affairs, International Journal of Cuban Studies, and many more. It is a good source for those looking for information and research relating to the history of U.S.-Cuban relations.

This subscription database includes digitized hearing documents, the Congressional Record, digitized committee reports and legislation, and some executive branch documents. It has been included because a lot of discussion related to the relationship between the two countries, discussion revolving around legislation, and other information has occurred in congressional hearings related to legislation, specific events, or more general topics.
