Danish Collections at the Library of Congress

European Reading Room Reference Collections

The European Reading Room provides direct access to a large number of reference works on Denmark, such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, histories, biographical directories, bibliographies, and other reference sources. The reading room makes available for onsite use numerous bibliographic databases and full-text resources, many of which contain citations or texts pertaining to Denmark. The multilingual reference staff provides research guidance in using these resources. Materials from the general collections can be requested to this reading room or to several other reading rooms.

The reference collection of the European Reading Room has about 120 titles under Denmark, some of which are multi-volume works. To search only in the European Reading Room reference collection, go to Advanced Search under Search Options in the Library of Congress Online Catalog. From a dropdown menu on the right, select Holdings Keyword, and enter "Denmark" into the textbox to its left. Click on the Add Limits button below, and select European Reference Collection from the first list, which is titled Location in the Library. Lastly, hit the Search button at the very bottom of the page.

The titles below represent a small selection of the Denmark section of the European Reading Room reference collection, including works in both English and Danish. Some of these are typical reference works, such as dictionaries and encyclopedias, others are monographs of note and interest for those studying Danish history and culture. These titles have been chosen to reflect the Denmark of both past and present, and to offer some starting points for genealogists, scholars, and the generally curious.
