Danish Collections at the Library of Congress

Online Resources

Free, digital resources, such as certain photographs and books in the public domain, can be accessed from anywhere in the world through the Library of Congress Online Catalog. Some e-books and newspapers under copyright can be read onsite at the Library of Congress through the Stacks online system. For more information on Stacks, please see the video below. Another option is the Library of Congress E-Resources Online Catalog. Here one can find databases and e-journals, which are proprietary and only available onsite, as well as free Websites, which can be read anywhere. To search across a great swath of the Library of Congress' e-resources, use Primo federated search, but please bear in mind that the subscription resources in the search results will only be accessible onsite. Although none of the e-resources listed below are for Denmark exclusively, all of them contain a number of items that are either about Denmark or are in the Danish language. The library system of Det Kgl. Bibliotek External [The Royal Library] is the best place to start searching for Danish materials, as it contains physical and online items from the National Library, Aarhus University, the IT University, University of Copenhagen, Roskilde University, and the Danish School of Media and Journalism. Rigsarkivet External is Denmark's national archives, and it is accessible online, but only about 2% of its collections have been digitized. For materials on the Danish West Indies (now the U.S. Virgin Islands), visit The Danish West-Indies – Sources of History External or use the Caribbean databases listed below.(See also the Library of Congress' U.S. Virgin Islands: State Resource Guide.)
