Danish Collections at the Library of Congress

Special Collections

The Tivoli park entrance, Copenhagen, Denmark. Between ca. 1890 and ca. 1900. Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division.

Items from or about Denmark, or in the Danish language, can be found throughout the Library of Congress collections, not only in the general collections but also in the special collections. The pages below this one offer a schematic overview of materials in Danish, or otherwise from or about Denmark, in the Library’s special collections. Given that this survey of the special collections must by necessity remain cursory, interested readers, listeners, and viewers should direct their questions to the appropriate reading room, each of which is listed on the pages below.

One might start by searching the Library of Congress Online Catalog, but the reference staff in these reading rooms are also ready to help. For instance, the Geography and Maps Reading Room has an uncatalogued collection of about one thousand items, Maps of Denmark from approximately 1658 to 1970, and so their reference staff can be of assistance in finding a particular map there. Often, readers, listeners, and viewers may also have to visit a particular reading room in order to be served material, such as the Moving Image Research Center and the Recorded Sound Research Center. With general collections, on the other hand, there is usually some degree of flexibility as to where the material is served.

The pages below provide information about some of the notable Danish items in the special collections of the Library of Congress: the American Folklife Center; Geography and Map; the Law Library; Local History & Genealogy; Manuscript; Moving ImageRecorded Sound; Performing Arts; Prints and Photographs; and Rare Book and Special Collections.
