This guide lists Danish newspapers accessible at the Library of Congress, whether that be in print, microfilm, or electronic format. The guide also provides some recommendations for searching for Danish newspapers on the free Web. Holdings information not included in the Library's online catalog is available here. In general, Danish newspaper titles in print or on microfilm are available in the Newspaper and Current Periodical Reading Room or the Microfilm and Electronic Resources Center unless otherwise noted. For the purposes of this list, the term newspaper is applied in a broad sense. Thus, any title that is published on newsprint or that would generally be considered a newspaper by its contemporary readers is included. Danish is also interpreted broadly to include not just Danish-language newspapers, but newspapers published in German, English, Faroese, or Greenlandic in the Kingdom of Denmark, the Danish West Indies, the Faroe Islands, or Greenland.
This guide provides each newspaper's title, a link to the relevant Library of Congress catalog record, and the microfilm number or call number. If you decide to visit the Library, please contact the staff in advance to request the materials you would like to use, so that you will not have to wait for them. If you cannot find a desired title on this list, please check the Library's holdings in the Library of Congress Online Catalog or contact the Library's staff through the Ask a Librarian system.
The lists in this guide are arranged by place of publication. Newspapers published in Denmark are divided into two pages, one for Copenhagen newspapers, and one for newspapers outside of Copenhagen. Newspapers published outside of Denmark are detailed on three separate pages, one for newspapers published in the Danish West Indies, one for newspapers published in the Faroe Islands and Greenland, and one for Danish newspapers published in the United States. There is also a page dedicated to both the underground newspapers that appeared in Denmark during the Nazi Occupation (1940-1945) and the newspapers published abroad during this same period by the Danish émigré press. Lastly, a final page focuses on general Danish-American newspapers. Each listing contains the following information as provided: city of publication, full title and alternate titles, dates of publication, call number or film number, and years held. Links are included to digitized newspapers in databases or on the free Web insofar as these are available.
