Documentary Drawings in the Library of Congress, 1776-1970

Searching & Viewing

Described below are methods for searching the two collections and arranging to view them in person. It is helpful to understand how the two collections are organized and what is available online.

The American documentary drawings (DRWG/US) are arranged by size and associated name. Primary access is through the online catalog, as most of the art has been digitized for online access. All of the drawings have been prepared for ready on-site service.

The international documentary drawings (DRWG 1) drawings are arranged by size and associated name or broad subject category. Primary access is through the online catalog, as each drawing has an item-level catalog record. Only a selection have been digitized or photographed for online access. All of the drawings have been prepared for ready on-site service.

Viewing Materials On Site

Researchers who are able to visit on site may request to view drawings by submitting a call slip in the reading room. We generally request that for drawings already digitized at high resolution, researchers first look at the highest resolution file (tiff file) to gain as much visual information as possible, before requesting to view an original, as retrieving and refiling fragile drawings puts added wear and tear on them. Please contact us in advance if you want to see more than 15 drawings on a single day.
