Both marriage and divorce are major categories of family law. A knowledge of state law is particularly critical in this area, as all states have passed laws regulating the formation and dissolution of recognized unions. Federal law can also play a role, however. In 2015, the historic Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges [PDF] ruled that bans on same-sex marriage were unconstitutional, and same-sex couples are now allowed to marry anywhere in the United States.
