With the use of GIS, the Bozeman Sanborn Maps can be explored layered over a modern aerial photo to better understand the changes that have occured. Additional Sanborn Maps will be added as they become available.

HistoryForge is an innovative digital history platform which integrates georeferenced mosaics of Sanborn maps with historical demographic data from the 1850-1950 censuses photos and other local history resources to enable a new way to envision and examine a community’s history. HistoryForge is an open-source platform being developed by The History Center in Tompkins County, in Ithaca, NY for communities across the country.
From The Forge, you can see georeferenced historic map layers of Ithaca’s 1888, 1898, 1910, and 1919 Sanborn maps which can be viewed over a Google map layer. In addition to providing important context about a community’s historic built environment, these maps are a portal to HistoryForge’s linked building, census, and person records.

In 2017 Milwaukee County Land Information Office (MCLIO) georeferenced the American Geographical Society’s 1910 Sanborn atlas sheets. Adding geographic location to these library items has opened doors for many exciting ways that scholars can access historic information from these sources. Now, the sheets appear as one seamless map, but each sheet can be isolated and linked to the individual item in the digital collection.

A crowdsourcing site for creating and viewing georeferenced mosaics of historical fire insurance maps from the Library of Congress. The 2022 pilot project included a wide range of Sanborn editions across Louisiana but has now expanded to include cities across the country. The georeferenced images are available for download, or can be integrated into external web maps or GIS software.

In the Spring of 2021, students in John Baeten's Social and Historical GIS course took part in a novel collaborative class project that sought to reconstruct Bloomington in the past. This involved the digitization, categorization, and synthesis of historical data for the City of Bloomington, and their integration into a Geographic Information System or GIS. 19 students and the instructor developed the first data set of the Reconstructing Bloomington, a snap shot of what Bloomington looked like in 1907. The following story map and associated data provide us with a window into the past, and the opportunity to explore what Bloomington's built environment and social landscape looked like more than a century ago.
