Folktales and Oral Storytelling: Resources in the American Folklife Center Collections

This section provides resources according to the cultural community to which the stories or storytellers belong.

Cultural Community

For ease of access, this guide also categorizes stories and storytellers according to their cultural background. In the following sub-pages, you will find information on African American storytelling, Indigenous storytelling in the US and Canada, Latinx storytelling in the US, Appalachian storytelling, and international storytelling in the AFC's collections. In many cases, stories and storytellers belong to more than one of these cultural communities, or identify with a cultural community not listed here. While these categories may help to focus early research efforts, we encourage you to consider whether and how these labels apply to the materials you find. You may use the navigation links in the left sidebar to explore each of the subpages focused on collections related to a particular community.
