Notes: "This was the first French newspaper printed in America." Supplements accompany some issues. By most accounts this is the second French newspaper printed in the United States (the first being La Gazette Françoise in 1780). Le Courier was "interested in Pennsylvania affairs with a leaning to the Democratic party," and "although published in French it was antimonarchical." [Shearer] Today there are copies in several other American libraries (but the Library of Congress has the fullest range—17 out of 26). The Library of Congress also has a ledger and volume of accounts owned by Boinod et Gaillard. [Boinod & Gaillard, editors of the Courier de l'Amérique, the first French newspaper published in the United States. Ledger, May 1784-August 1785, contains accounts current with individuals and firms including Charles Cist, printer of the Courier. Volume of accounts, June 1784-January 1785, includes a list of subscribers to the Courier and entries concerning distribution of the paper.
