"Prior to the establishment of a truly Franco-American press, a breed of short-lived but significant French-Canadian newspapers appeared in New England. The failure of the [Canadian] Insurrection of 1837-1838 caused a few rebels or patriotes to take refuge in northern Vermont, where they founded newspapers advocating the creation of an independent Canadian republic. The best known of these, Le Patriote Canadien of Burlington, lasted for six months in 1839-1840. Its publisher was Ludger Duvernay, a Montreal journalist and high-ranking patriote" (Perreault 1987: 116).
