George Washington: A Resource Guide

George Washington was the commander in chief of the Continental Army and the first president of the United States (1789-97). This guide compiles digital materials at the Library of Congress, external websites, and a selected print bibliography.

Introduction

The digital collections of the Library of Congress contain a wide variety of material associated with George Washington, including the complete George Washington Papers from the Manuscript Division, which consist of approximately 77,000 items and constitute the largest collection of original Washington papers in the world. Document types in the George Washington Papers include correspondence, letterbooks, commonplace books, diaries, journals, financial account books, military records, reports, and notes accumulated by Washington from 1741 through 1799.
