The Geography & Map Division's History of Computer Cartography and Geographic Information Sciences Archive is a large-scale ongoing project to collect materials (including maps, algorithms, correspondence ,technical papers, data, software, and more) related to the founding and evolution of computer cartography, often referred to as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which includes both the evolution of GIS software and the development of satellite imaging. Subjects covered by the archive range from foundational computational work completed by the Harvard Laboratory for Computer Graphics and Spatial Analysis to the early history of Landsat and remote sensing. Viewing the Earth by The Geography & Map Division's Geographers on Film collection contains recorded interviews conducted with geographers from August 1970 until the mid-1980s, and includes interview with scholars and cartographers who have shaped the disciplines of geography and cartography.
