This Geography & Map Division visualization explores the Climatological Database for the World's Oceans, 1750-1850 (CLIWOC), a 2001-2003 European Union-funded research project involving a large international team of researchers and organizations. Researchers compiled data taken from over 280,000 logbooks written aboard British, Dutch, French, and Spanish sailing ships between 1750 and 1850. The resulting database, containing comprehensive weather observations and voyage details, is an invaluable resource for the study of climate and maritime history. The Library of Congress digitally acquired a copy of CLIWOC in 2018. In this web map, toggle the legend to show British, Dutch, French, and Spanish ships. Volume Finders help users pinpoint which Sanborn Fire Insurance Atlas Volume(s) provide coverage for specific geographic areas of interest.

This Geography and Map Division application allows a user to explore the Library's Panoramic Map collection, which spans both Geography and Map and Prints and Photographs Divisions. Also known also as bird's-eye views or perspective maps, panoramic maps are nonphotographic representations of cities portrayed as if viewed from above at an angle. Although not typically drawn to scale, these maps show street patterns, individual buildings, and major landscape features in perspective.
