The Grand Army of the Republic has a number of auxiliary organizations. They were meant to aid the GAR by providing direct lineal descendants such as sons and daughters, as well as wives and widows of Union Civil War veterans with supportive, purposeful connections to the membership of the GAR and to continue carrying out the GAR's mission.
