First incorporated as the National Alliance of the Daughters of Veterans of the United States of America on December 12, 1885, and endorsed by the Grand Army of the Republic at its 34th annual encampment held in Chicago in 1900. The auxiliary's name was changed to "Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War" at their 35th national convention held in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1925 and then changed to Daughter of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865 External at their 54th national convention held in Des Moines, Iowa in 1944.
