American Folklife Center Collections: Guam

American Folklife Center collections from Guam include one sound cassette of music from Guam and Hawai'i recorded in 1983 by folklorist Bess Lomax Hawes during a recording trip in the Pacific islands and items in the Local Legacies Project, described below.

Local Legacies Project Collection

The Local Legacies Project was as an initiative of members of Congress and individuals across the nation to commemorate the Library of Congress Bicentennial in 2000. The resulting collection includes documentation of communities and traditions throughout the United States. Local Legacies projects from Guam include items from the drama Taotao Latte (People of the Latte, 2000 BC to 800 AD), a performance at the Seventh Festival of Pacific Arts in 1996; "A Tribute to Masters of Chamorro Tradition," honoring the arts of the Chamorro people of Guam; documentation from the XI South Pacific Games in 1999; three Spanish legacy posters; photographs of restored historic structures on Guam; a booklet published for the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Guam's liberation from enemy occupation in World War II; a booklet of the centennial commemoration ceremony depicting the struggle of Guam's leaders to attain "home rule and American citizenship," culminating in President Truman's signing of the Organic Act of Guam; on August 1, 1950, a report of the centennial commemorative ceremony and dramatic re-enactment of the transfer of sovereignty over Guam from the Crown of Spain to the United States during the Spanish-American War and a video of the ceremony.
